Pet of the Week

Website: Dogwood Animal Shelter
Telephone: 573-346-4807
Hey! It's Remi again!
I'm an soooo excited that I get to be on the radio AND in the newspaper this week!!! You see, the vet said last week that it would be best for me to be in a home all my own to speed up my recovery. However, I am still here! I don't understand. I really thought someone would come get me and love me all better. Well, because I have had to stay here, for my safety, I have had to be in a room all by myself. If I am allowed to run around with the other animals, I might get hurt and mess up my jaw. It's fragile you know... 300 other animals, 16 employees, countless volunteers, and I'm STILL lonely. Doesn't make a lot of sense, does it? Now you know why I am so looking forward to my radio interview. I will actually get to leave the shelter if only for a few hours. My hope is that my fur-ever best friend listens to 107.9, The Coyote, or is an avid local newspaper reader. I just know in my heart that you are out there somewhere waiting for me like I am waiting for you. But, I can't drive, so it's up to you to come get me, ok?
Pets from Previous Weeks

I am the ittiest, bittiest, kitty-est at Dogwood Animal Shelter! My name is Freeway and, as if you couldn't already guess, I was found alongside the highway. I'm not sure how I got there, but now I am at Dogwood and life is pretty cool here. I really would like a home of my own though. You see, as cats should be, I am a rather curious soul. My only complaint here is that I don't get out of my kitty play area very much so I can't go exploring! I think I am about 9 weeks old, but since I can't even remember how I got on the highway, you can't really expect me to remember my birthday, right? Anyway, I know inside my little kitty heart that I am going to be the best cat anyone could ever ask for! PLEASE come adopt me!! I need room to roam! (toys are great too!) Thanks for listening!
Freeway

Howdy Coyote Nation!
We're here to let you know that it's currently "puppy-palooza" at Dogwood Animal Shelter!  There are just so many puppies currently residing here, that it's difficult to get noticed!  Also, because Dogwood is a no-kill shelter, there is no room left for other animals needing shelter right now.  The rule is:  some have to go out for more to come in!  In our litter there are six!  Our momma was hit by a car when we were only 9 days old!  She's doing well, but because of all the meds she had to take, the Dr. wouldn't let her nurse us anymore.  So, some wonderful foster mommas took us in, bottle fed us, and did everything for us in place of our momma.  It sure was weird going from a 4-legged momma to a 2-legged one! But, now that we are used to it, we sure would like to have an entire 2-legged family to call our own.  There are a bunch of other litters here too.  Stop by and get to know us all.  It will be worth it!

Apollo
Ok, what do you think about when you hear the name Apollo?
Landing on the moon, Greek God, Gold Medalist, the famous theatre?... the list goes on and on. Not to brag or anything, but I am named after greatness! However, I am still waiting to be discovered at Dogwood Animal Shelter. I don't get it...I was born here at the end of April this year, made available for adoption in June, and still waiting in August! I have done my best to live up to my name, but it has become apparent that grovelling may become necessary in order to get out of here. I am still on the small side, but getting bigger every day. I have heard the older cats talking in the next room and they say that if us kittens don't get adopted soon, we will end up being here for a very long time. How am I suppose to live up to my potential when I am stuck in the kitten room all the time? Please help me. I will be the best kitten, then cat, you could ever hope for! My name guarantees it.
Thanks!
Apollo

Carmel & Randy comin' atch ya! We're siblings of the "Lab-stiff" breed (lab and mastiff mix)! Our feet might be big, but they're webbed! Take us swimming please... We LOVE the pool on the puppy patio at the shelter, but a creek, stream, river, or lake sounds like tons more fun. You really couldn't ask for a better mix of breeds you know! Labs are smart, obedient, and loyal to the end...Mastiffs are easy-going, gentle, all-around good dogs. Seriously, what fault could you find? And, to top all that off, we (& our 3 sisters still at the shelter) are just the cutest puppies you will ever come across in your life! We swear! Treats are great, toys are fun, laps are best, blah, blah, blah... we're not selling used cars here, it shouldn't be so hard! Please come get us, we're ready to be part of a family, not a pack.
Thanks,
Carmel & Randy (& Emmy Lou, Martina and Tiger Lilly)

Hi!  I'm Gatsby, and yes, I'm GREAT!  My momma came to the shelter already pregnant, so I was born here at Dogwood.  At 3 months old, I am almost ready to be neutered!  That means that I will not be the cause of any more homeless kitties like me.  I am sooo proud of that.  Besides, if I understand it right, being neutered makes me more likable and takes away a few health risks too!  Like I said to begin with, I'm great!  That means healthy, playful, eager to please, ready to be your best friend, I get along well with others, I have all my shots, and even my very own micro-chip!  Talk about ready to go!  It only takes a few minutes to fill out my adoption paperwork and claim me as your very own fuzzball!  Bring your photo I.D., permission from your landlord if you rent, and a lap for me to sit in and I'm all yours!
See you soon,
Gatsby

Adopt Mercedes & Porsche!

We are Mercedes and Porsche...you can call us Little M and the Divine Ms. P! We are incredibly special and we know it!!! We were born here at the shelter back in the clinic. We have had a little bit of a hard time getting ready for adoption. Some days we haven't felt too good, so we have been going home with some of the staff members here. (Some days we felt ok, but we still wanted to go home with somebody!) Anyway, we really would like to stay together if possible. You see, we both feel so much better with our sister near. Our momma was a Jack Russel mix and only weighed about 30 pounds. We expect that we will stay on the small side as well. Although, we have discovered that treats are a wonderful thing! When we smell those, we don't care one little bit about our girlish figures! You must know that special girls require special humans. So, if you feel that you are the right fit for us, stop by and we'll give you a sniff or two!
M & P

Adopt Flurry!

Beautiful! That is the only word needed to describe me, nothing else. So, come get me already. Can you believe that I am stuck in a room with other cats!? Seriously! I even have to eat from the same bowl as them! I am declawed in front because of my love of all things silk! That way I don't snag my bed; it must stay pristine! I demand it. I am a very loving girl when I choose to pay attention to you. As it should be, everything goes according to my plan, schedule, and comfort. Thank goodness I am already spayed; children are not my idea of a good time! I barely have time to take proper care of myself and my things let alone some whiny little kittens. My vaccinations are up-to-date as well. I wouldn't have it any other way! Why aren't you here to get me yet?
Flurry

Adopt Marci!

Hi again everyone! It's Marci. On the 18th of this month I will be 11 months old. I really had hoped that I would have a furever home before my first birthday, but it's not looking so good. All of my siblings have found their homes and are doing well. I sure would like to know what it's like out there. I have been at Dogwood since I was just 8 weeks old! My mama was what they call a stray, so once we were weaned, she took off and I haven't seen her since. My sister, Peppermint Patty, kept my spirits up pretty good, but just last week she got adopted. I'm trying my best not to be depressed, but I sure do miss my brothers and sisters a lot. I just think that if I could concentrate on being a good member of a human family, I would feel so much better. I am a very smart girl (that's what my caretakers say). I know how to sit, I listen very well, and I enjoy going out on a leash. Please, if you are looking for a friend, consider me. You will NOT regret it...that is my promise!!!

Adopt Chelsea & Christa

***Yawn***
Sorry we're so tired, but it sure is fun here at the shelter! We have played all day and could not stay awake for our photo-op! Besides, we both wanted to get our beauty sleep for the radio this morning. We are Chelsea & Krista, the two cutest sisters you ever will see. Humans are still a little scary for us, but we're trying really hard to trust everyone a little more. Treats sure are GREAT! Once we figured that part out, it was easy to be brave. We would love to meet you all and test our new social skills. Visiting hours at the shelter are from 10am - 5pm Monday thru Friday, and Saturdays from 10am - 4pm. We will be closed on Monday the 5th in observance of the holiday. Make sure to stop by soon; our social calendars will be filling up quickly!

Adopt Moppet!

Good Day!
My name is Moppet and I currently reside at Dogwood Animal Shelter! I really rather enjoy my days here, but am getting tired of sharing absolutely everything. I mean come on! Just once I would like to walk out on the patio and get the sunny spot on the log without having to scare someone else away. Don't get me wrong, I am a very loving girl and would make a great addition into any family; it would just be nice to be one of two, maybe three cats...not 150! Don't forget that June is Adopt a Shelter Cat month. In other words...Hurry up already!
Thanks for listening,
Moppet

Adopt Jack!

Hello, My name is Jack and I have lived here at Dogwood most of my one and a half years. As you can see, I have a beautiful, shiny black and grey coat. Come a little closer and you will notice a little orange coloring around my face. Although I am worthy of more, I truly just want to be comfortable, loved, played with and live a fulfilled life. You will find that I am quite smart, playful, loving, and err on the side of mature! I do enjoy spending time with people. So, let me just part with this message: Rescue at cat, namely me. I am waiting!
Love,
Jack

Adopt Murphy!

Meet Murphy

Hey ya'll! Murphy here... My job today is to remind you about Adopt a Shelter Cat Month! During the month of June, all cats and kittens at Dogwood Animal Shelter are available to adopt for only $50! That includes the spay or neuter, all shots, and micro-chipping. Some of us have been here at the shelter for so long that I'm putting a lot of hope into this promotion. It would be so nice to have a real home where we can get individual attention. The staff and numerous volunteers do everything they can to give me a little more than our basic needs, but with so many of us (150!!) currently living at the shelter, they can't spare more than a few minutes at a time. I look forward to having my very own toys to chase around and more than a couple of minutes with a good brush once a week! Please, if you have the time, stop by and visit me soon. Even if you can't adopt one of us right now, your few minutes of attention are a few more that we would greatly appreciate.

Adopt an adorable kitten!

We're black, we're white, we're striped, we're orange, we're tan, we're CROWDED!!! It's what you would call "kitten crazy" up here at Dogwood Animal Shelter right now. A few of us adorable little kittens are hittin' the airwaves today to let you know that June is Adopt a Shelter Cat month. Would you believe that there are over 40 of us kittens at the shelter right now? And...over 150 adult cats. So, for the rest of the month, you can add a cat to your family for only $50! That includes our spay or neuter, all of our shots are up-to-date, and we are micro-chipped so we can always get back home if we're lost!

Duke and Duchess

Hey, Roundman. How's it goin'? Remember me? I'm Duke and this is… well… my significant other… Duchess. Yeah… we're back at the shelter. We first went there three years ago, after our owner died and his wife went to a nursing home. That was tough. It took a year and a half to find us a new home. Even tougher, our new owners had to move to a place where we aren't welcome. So… here we are… again… after two great loving homes.

Shouldn't complain, though. Two squares a day, roof over our heads, lots of action around us, comfy bed, and most of all, Duchess and I are still together. Tell ya what. Duchess and I have lived through some tough times together and we've managed to stay mellow. Huh… maybe that's not too unusual at 10 and 12 years old, though, huh?

Yeah! 10 and 12 years old! Where did the time go? Not much chance of anyone wanting to give us a real home at our ages. The way we look at it, though, what's age? Say we have two to maybe five years left. That's up to 5 years of the best doggie love anyone could have. And the bonuses!!! You know, we're totally housebroken: I bark when I need to go out and Duchess stares pitifully at the door. We don't want to go for long walks and we'll take kisses, hugs and pats any day over chasing balls. And you sure don't have to worry about us chewing stuff up with our old teeth! Yeah, man. We're mellow, alright. We don't need or want much. Happiness is a warm doggie bed and a couple of treats.

But, here's the thing, Roundman. If you could help get Duchess a real home, I'd be mighty beholden to you. I'd miss her somethin' awful, but if we both can't be happy, please let it be her. I could find a lot of happiness just knowing Duchess has a loving home.

OK, my man. Do what you can. And… please know… we bless you for it!

Kirsten, Keane, Keefer, & Keeley

Hello Coyote people!
We're Kirsten, Keane, Keefer, & Keeley. In the middle of the night a couple of weeks ago, we were dropped off at the gate to the shelter with our mommy. The shelter employees said something about how that means the "Spring Fling" has begun...whatever that means. Anyway, life has been pretty cool since we got here because we've met lots of other kitty friends. (32 others to be exact!) But, now that we've had time to be part of a larger group, we would like the chance to become part of a smaller family. We would like to invite you to come visit us in the kitten room at Dogwood Animal Shelter and give us a chance to steal your heart! If not us, then maybe one of the 32 other babies!
Hope to see you soon!

Addie & Finley

Hi! Hi! Hi!
We're Addie and Finley. We are both beautiful little girls who are currently entertaining the staff at Dogwood Animal Shelter. We just recently became available for adoption and are hoping that our "fur-ever" friends will come get us soon! Both of us love everyone at the shelter, but we know that in order for more homeless pets to find shelter there, we have to go to nice homes first!

"Addie was found all by herself in a parking lot! Can you believe it? Look at her face...would you be able to pass her by? She is also a very good friend!" "Thanks for telling my story Finley! Now let me tell you all about Finley:

Finley's momma was hit by a car when she was just a couple of weeks old. Isn't that horrible?! She came to shelter with a litter of 7 pups. Unfortunately, only Finley and 2 others made it through! Both of her brothers have already been adopted, so without me, she would be on her own!" We hope that you will all stop by and meet us soon. We really are too cute for words!!! Thanks for listening!

Peppermint Patty
Peppermint Patty is my name...finding a home is my game! Hi All! I am another one of Dogwood's Big Black Dogs. However, I am only 8 months old, so I'm not so big yet. You previously had the pleasure of meeting my brothers, Linus & Schroeder. Luckily, Linus has found a home, but Schroeder, Marcie, and myself are still waiting. Just a reminder...Big Black Dog Syndrome awareness month ends this Friday! Please don't wait any longer! I am getting so nervous thinking about having to leave the puppy room and go to the kennel. I am keeping my hopes up though because so far this month 29 black dogs have been adopted from Dogwood. So, I know that my family is out there somewhere. Thanks for listening and I hope to see you soon! (By Friday please)
Midnight
Cheese!!! No, really, do you have some? I'm smiling already! My name is Midnight and if you can't tell by my name alone, I am another one of Dogwood's Big Black Dogs! I have been at the Shelter since February 2006. Will someone please come take me home? I got the chance once, but they brought me back because I was NOT aggressive! Can you believe that? It's ok though, they wanted to leave me chained outside and I prefer to be part of the family myself. Kids are great too! (they drop food and crumbs...he-he!) So, if you are looking for a best friend and someone to share your secrets (and treats!) with, I'm your guy!
Hope to see you soon.
Midnight
Izzy
Hi Everyone!
My name is Izzy! I am yet another Big Black Dog at Dogwood Animal Shelter, but I will tell you why I'm a little different. You see, I have a problem with my eyes. It is called Entropion. In other words, my eyelids roll in and cause the hair to rub my eyeballs. I don't complain much, but it does hurt a lot so you may see some tears in my eyes on occasion. The vet told my caretakers that I have a very severe case and that if I don't get surgery I will go blind! I really enjoy this beautiful world around me and hope that my caretakers can find a way to help me. The surgery is going to cost at least $450! I know that the shelter does not have that kind of money laying around, but I am a positive thinker, so I will just keep hoping! If you would like to help my caretakers help me, please write my name, Izzy, on any sized donation. (Even $5 would go far!) 100% of ALL donations given to Dogwood Animal Shelter go directly to our care & our caretakers put absolutely every penny to good use! However, after food, shots, micro-chips, and the normal spays & neuters, there are not enough funds leftover for "extras." But, like I said, I am an optimistic girl, so I know that there are those of you out there who will come through for me! Thanks in advance!
Champ

Hello Dog Lovers!
I am Champ and I am so excited to let you know that my sister, Carley, has been adopted! It is my pleasure to replace her as Dogwood Animal Shelter's "spokes-dog" and continue to teach you all about "Big Black Dog Syndrome!" I arrived with Carley and the rest of our litter on January 2, 2005! I have never had a chance to leave the shelter! Although I am only 5 years old, I have become a little grey around the chops! Don't let that fool you though, I am VERY young at heart! Because of "Big Black Dog Syndrome" I don't get noticed at all! I apparently blend in with all the other black dogs. I just wish (like all the other black dogs here) that some one would just give me a chance! If you come visit me, please get a leash and take me out for a walk. One on one I can show you all that I have to offer. I am very interested in getting out of here so that I can find out what this thing called a "ball" is that the incoming dogs talk about. They all miss it whatever is, so it must be something special. Do you have one? If so, I would LOVE to help you take care of it!

Piper

Hello everyone!
My name is Piper! I was introduced to you last week in place of my friends, Linus and Schroeder. They were busy spreading the message about "Big Black Dog Syndrome" and asked me to fill in for them at the last minute. Because it is such an important topic, I had no problem getting up early and coming to the radio station! All of us "little" big black dogs know all too well what happens when we get too big to stay up front in the puppy room. We have to go in back to the "kennels" (sounds like a scary place to me!) where we will blend in with all the other black dogs. Someone said that maybe black dogs are overlooked because the seem scary. Look at me! Do I really look scary? I really am a marshmallow (don't tell the boys please!)! My goal in life is to be a lap dog! While the sun is shining, I will play with you, love you, sit with you, and follow you anywhere! When the moon is out, I will watch over you and keep you safe until the sun rises again! Just give me a chance, I promise I will stand-out to you and for you!
Thanks for listening,
Piper

Churchill

This stub-tailed cutie is Churchill. She has been with us since May, 2009. Although we are not sure of her age, we are guessing that she is a young adult. Love and attention is what she's looking for. She adores everyone and will play as long as you are willing. Stop by the shelter and give her a chance. She will prove to you what a great cat she is!

Tank

This handsome fella is Tank!  He is a very sweet, out-going kind of guy.  People always comment about how quiet he is!  He gets along with everybody...puppies, older dogs, and even cats.  Tank was found by the shelter staff upon their arrival to work one morning in last June.  He learned all of the basic commands quickly and does pretty good on a leash.  He will be turning one in March... maybe adoption paperwork will be his birthday present!

Grumpy

Grumpy came in with the other 6 "dwarfs" in October, 2006. He and his twin, Doc, are both still here at Dogwood! While he is extremely handsome, he is also very shy. But, once he gets to know you, he'll play all day! Grumpy has done well with the obedience trainers, learning sit, down, & come. When first put on a leash he pulls a little, but after a bit, he enjoys the walk! Won't you come be his "Snow White"?!! "Hi-ho, hi-ho, it's off to a home he goes!" And...don't forget about his twin brother, Doc!

Ebony

Ebony is such a handsome guy! We just don't understand why he hasn't found a "fur-ever" home yet! He came to Dogwood Animal Shelter just six weeks old, almost FIVE years ago! Our canine coaches have taught him how to sit, stay, lay down, and come. He loves to earn his treats! He still pulls a little on the leash, but with more frequent walks, we're sure he would learn the "heel" command as quickly as he learned the others! Come by the shelter and visit Ebony; you won't regret it!

Delta

Delta is one of our newest "inmates"!  We couldn't resist putting her in this adorable prisoner garb donated to us.  Delta and her litter-mates arrived via a box at Dogwood!  We believe that she and her brothers are sheppard/husky mixes.  Delta was the only girl and is absolutely the boss of the puppy pile!  We estimate her to be approximately 10 weeks old.  Stop by and help her escape!  (At least from her brothers!)

Thunder Thunder came to Dogwood Animal Shelter in March, 2007. We estimated that he was about 2 months old then. He has done very well with the Canine Coaches that come to the shelter. They say that he follows all of the basic commands and walks well on a leash. Thunder enjoys playing with dogs and people! Will you be his lifetime playmate?
Spanky Here's Spanky! He is a very affectionate, playful, loving, cross-eyed cat! Yes, I said cross-eyed! Spanky has a long, sad story with a happy ending. He was found in a chemical filled ditch as a kitten. The chemicals burned his inner eyelids, requiring him to endure many rounds of treatments to get better. We then moved Spanky to the adoption area so that he could find a home. However, within days, we noticed he was having problems with his eyes again. Unfortunately, the chemical burns to his inner eyelids caused his lashes to begin growing inward towards his eyes, causing an infection. The only way to remedy this problem for Spanky was to remove the inner eyelids. Because of this, he now appears to be cross-eyed! There was a lot of concern about him losing his sight for a while, but our little trooper pulled through without a problem. He now requires eye drops as needed to help him lubricate his eyes, but other than that, he is the purr-fect cat! Wouldn't he look great in your window sill?
Miley Meet Miley!
Lady LADY is a 3 ½ year old Rottweiler mix. She is one of our STARS! Quite honestly we are surprised she hasn’t been adopted yet. Lady was adopted from us as a puppy. Her owners returned her to the shelter about two years ago when they lost their home and couldn’t take her with them. She is an absolute all around great dog! She is gentle, good with people and other dogs; as well as being affectionate, obedient and attentive. She is also housebroken! Please give this loving family dog a home again!
Brownie BROWNIE came to us one year ago as a puppy. She is an adorable Australian Shepard/Lab mix. Her owners were unable to keep the entire litter. Brownie is playful, loving and wants lots of affection. She is very well behaved and highly attentive. She should be a breeze to train!
Biscuit BISCUIT – She is a 2 ½ year old Australian Shepard mix. She is a super sweet dog!! She needs help on a leash due to her shyness; but as attentive and smart as she is, she should pick it up in no time! She is wonderful with other dogs. Look into her eyes-----she’s saying “hey you---take me home!”
Hendrix HENDRIX is a lab mix who is almost 1 year old. He was born November 28, 2008 in foster care, and brought to us December 20, 2008…one of our “Christmas” babies! Hendrix is playful, affectionate and attentive. He’s ready for training! He is great with people, other dogs and children. He is truly the all around dog any family would want. OCTOBER IS ADOPT A SHELTER DOG MONTH!!
Louisa

LOUISA is a little over 3 years old and is a Shepherd mix. She is very intelligent and has been to obedience training. She knows the commands of sit, come and down. She is great on a leash too! She absolutely loves to get & give attention! Louisa is one of our shelter dogs that during the month of October, can be adopted at a reduced rate. What a great time to get the perfect addition to your family! October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month.

Bobby

Bobby is a 2 year old coonhound mix. When meeting you for the first time, he is a little shy. But when he knows you he is very loving! He wants to give and receive affection. He gets along great with other dogs too. Won't you find a place in your heart and home for Bobby?

Shiloh

Shiloh is a very sweet, playful, & loveable black lab/terrier mix. She came to us as a puppy in February of this year. She enjoys being brushed and would like to be trained. Shiloh gets along very well with other dogs and is good with kids. She would be a perfect addition to any family.

Bugsy

Bugsy is one of the most loving, affectionate dogs at the shelter. A one year old male, Bugsy is a little shy, but loves people, other dogs and especially children. He has learned to walk beautifully on a leash. Because Bugsy is so attentive and wanting to please, he is easily trained. Treats? You don't need them. He's happy with hugs and kisses! Bugsy's only problem is that he's a black dog and therefore difficult to adopt. Anyone who looks past his color will realize quite readily what a wonderful guy he is.

Tate

This little wrinkle-faced Shar Pei is a sweetheart. He's loving and affectionate and gets along well with other dogs and people. Tate was born sometime in November of 2008, so he's still a playful pup. Brought to the shelter as a stray when he was seven months old, he's one of our favorite pooches.

Cosmo
ADOPTED!
Cosmo!
He is the coolest little guy. We think that Cosmo is a Cattle dog/Beagle mix. He is definitely unique. He loves to play and also thinks he might be a lap dog! He shows a lot of loyalty to his human counterparts and tries his hardest to be the "good boy!" Come visit him at Dogwood Animal Shelter and get to know him! Won't you please give him a home so that he no longer has to be the "stray?"
Peanut
ADOPTED!
Adopt Peanut! Peanut is a male cat, about 1 year old. Big beautiful yellow eyes - gets along great with other cats and dogs. He loves to chase the laser pointer too!
Skippy

ADOPTED!
Skippy is an 8 year old Lab mix. He was returned to the shelter after 7 years because his owner had to relocate, where she could not keep an animal. Skippy came from a good home. He's affectionate, loving to give and receive hugs. He's housetrained and enjoys playing with other dogs and children, too. There's no question, if you adopt Skippy, that you are getting the best dog you've ever had.

Toodles

ADOPTED!
Toodles is about as close to the perfect companion as any dog can be. She's a 1 1/2 year old bull terrier mix, medium-sized and extremely affectionate. Toodles loves people, though she tends to be a bit shy when first meeting someone. She's the kind of dog that loves to hang out with one person at a time, following at the person's side. Besides loving people, Toodles gets along great with other dogs and is playful and energetic. Our kennel staff say that she's obedient, attentive and actually a lot of fun, the kind of dog with whom a person bonds. Toodles is just hoping for a home where someone will be her best friend.

Rocky

ADOPTED!
Velvet came to us in mid-March as a stray; she was pregnant and about to deliver pups. She's a beautiful young, brindle and white Basenji mix. She was a very good mama to her 6 healthy puppies. All of them have been adopted now, but Velvet is still here - waiting. Though she has experienced motherhood, Velvet’s still got some puppy qualities herself. She's alert, energetic, playful and loves attention! Come and visit with her. We’re hoping she doesn’t have to wait too long for someone special to come rescue her!

Rocky

ADOPTED!
Rocky is a medium-sized 4 year old spaniel mix who has lived at the shelter since May. He is truly a sweet, easy-going little guy, friendly with people, cats and other dogs. Rocky is very well-behaved and was obviously housetrained. He's also a great traveler, having been a companion dog for an over-the-road trucker. Rocky is ready to be your best pal!

Abigail, Alice and Martha

ADOPTED!

Abigail, Alice and Martha, also known as "The Reds", are three older pups who have lived at Dogwood Animal Shelter for approximately nine months. They came to the shelter as young pups in poor condition, the worst case of ticks we've ever seen. It took four employees and volunteers three hours to rid them of all the ticks.

The three girls, approximately six months old at the time, had had no human contact and therefore were terrified of humans. Martha has managed to become quite social, not so with Abigail and Alice, who take a great deal of time to trust people. Though Abigail and Alice have become friendly with our front office staff, they hide under the reception desk, terrified, when visitors come through the front door. These three girls are among the most lovable, affectionate dogs we've had at the shelter. Absolutely, they will make terrific additions to any family. But, before that can happen for Abigail and Alice, they need to be socialized.

Lily is a small, sweet natured middle aged dog with a heart problem which is being controlled by medication. She was found in someone's barn, hiding from a storm. She's been with us for a couple of months or so. She loves children, adults and other dogs and cats. She spends her days at the shelter following the med wing staff and volunteers around as they do their work. If there's too much commotion, she starts to wheeze, but a few quiet moments of one-on-one attention for her usually settles her back down.

We just received a litter of small abandoned pups. Lilly is fretting over them and trying to be their mom!

She'll be such a loyal friend for someone!
