Hello! My name is Donzi and I'm a living, breathing example of why you should spay and neuter your pets. I am one of the last of many litters that were either born here or brought to the shelter last spring and summer. I sure don't understand why I'm still here since I'm such a handsome fella. I've got TONS of personality, playful as can be, love to be with you all the time, and did I mention good looking?!? I'm just waiting to find that special someone who will appreciate all I have to give. I promise I will be the perfect four legged companion if you will just give me a try. I wouldn't mind having a furry friend to hang with since I get along with everyone no matter how furry they are! So PLEASE come by the shelter and spend a little time with me and all my friends. I can guarantee that you will feel loved when you leave and so will we.
Love,
Donzi |

Hi Folks! I'm Action Jackson and I'm looking for someone to love! I was brought to Dogwood by an animal control officer when I was just a little guy. Don't remember what I did to deserve being left out on my own, but that's the way the officer found me. I'm sure glad he brought me to Dogwood! I've made lots of friends here, gotten lots of treats and toys and everything I need I guess – except a human of my very own. I dream of taking walks together, playing and romping together, listening to the comforting voice of my human and knowing that we can always count on each other…I wish really really hard every day but, so far, no luck. I have a zest for life that I NEED to share with somebody!!! In honor of St. Valentine's Day, during February, the adoption price for all of us dogs in the kennel is 50% off! Guess the folks here want to make it even easier for you all to experience the joys of the human-dog bond. We're all vaccinated, spayed or neutered, micro-chipped and ready to go! Come meet me and some of my buddies - we sure do look forward to visitors walking us, running with us in the big play yard, giving us yummy snacks and treating us like we're really special. So, I'm gonna do some extra hard wishing this month – somebody, please come choose me for your friend!
Love,
Jackson |

It's PUPPY TIME at Dogwood Animal Shelter. Hi folks. We're just a few of the puppies available for adoption right now at the shelter. We're a pretty mixed bunch. Some of us were born here, for which we are very grateful. We've heard that some of our new friends were found in a box on the side of the road, some were pulled out from underneath a house and some were just wandering the streets. But it's all good now....we've got a nice warm place to sleep, plenty of food for our little bellies and lots of toys to play with. Oh, did I mention all the love and attention we get? It's amazing what a little time in someone's loving arms can do for your soul. We're healthy, happy and playful and just waiting for someone to come in and fall in love with us (which won't be hard cuz we're so darned cute)! At least that's what we're told. So come on down and see for yourself. We dare you to try and resist the urge to pick one of us up and cuddle for a little bit. See you soon! |

I'd like to say hello to all my admirers....maybe there aren't a lot of you but I'm hoping that, after you see my pictures and hear my story, there will be more. My name is Cora. I'm one of the two beagles that will greet you at the door when you come to visit the shelter. I got lost from my original owner a while back and was just wandering the streets. Some big guys in a big truck picked me up but the shelter was full and I had nowhere to go. Thankfully, someone volunteered to take me into their home until my skin cleared up (I was a bit of a mess back then, but I look lots better now). So here it is, six months later and, cute as I am, I'm still here. It may be because of my age - I'm somewhere around seven or eight years old, I've lost track but I can still keep up with the young pups around here! You should come on by and take a look at me or one of the other dogs (or cats) here at the shelter. We've got lots going for us besides our good looks. We have TONS of love to give!
Hope to see you soon!

Hi everyone! My name is Phideaux. That's a really la-di-da way of saying Fido. Robin, from the kennel, thought it would be a really good name for me...like maybe I needed a little pick-me-up to make me feel better after being dumped in the Save a Lot parking lot. I was just a little, bitty guy - only about eight weeks old when I was left to fend for myself. Thankfully, a kind soul picked me up and took me to the shelter where I was greeted with open arms - lots and lots of them! I wasn't there very long when someone came along and adopted me. I thought it would be my forever home, but things didn't work out with their landlord so here I am back at the shelter. Now I'm still cute as a button, but I'm four and a half months old now and a little bigger than the eight week old puppy that went out of here before.
So maybe I could interest you in coming by and visiting me, maybe take me for a walk or play in the fenced area. I love to play fetch and I think I'm getting pretty good at it. I'm the boxer mix in the front puppy room so I see everyone who walks in the front door and I'll be waiting and watching just for you. So hope to see you real soon.
Love, Phideaux |

To know me is to love me! At least that's what I hear people say! My name is Bullseye and I've recently joined the ranks of the lucky cats here at Dogwood Animal Shelter. I haven't been here all that long, but long enough to know you can count on lots to eat, toys to play with, and plenty of friends, both two-legged and four-legged! I was found scared and all alone on the side of the road in Montreal . I'm a little older than most of the cats here (six years +), but I'm healthy and good natured – and SOOO hopeful that a nice person will come and meet me, swoop me up and take me home. I have lots of love to give and lots of years left to give it. So why not make a trip to Dogwood Animal Shelter and get to know me a little?
Love, Bullseye |

Greetings! I hope you all had a Merry Christmas! I'm Mickey. I first arrived at the shelter back in 2009 around Christmas time. I've been adopted before, and was in that home for a year, (IT WAS GREAT!) but when my family had to move, they brought me back here. I've been back at Dogwood for a year now, and even though I'm loved and taken care of here, I'd really like a real home again. I'm a really good dog, housebroken and all! And I LOVE to play (I had a boy to play with in my previous home). I'm pretty althletic –I can scale the fence at the shelter patio in one single bound, kinda like Superman! – so I'll need a really high fence at my new home. If you're an active person that would love having an adoring companion to run and play with, then I'M YOUR DOG! Come on by the shelter anytime and let's have a nice visit. I'm sure I could win you over.
Love, Mickey |

HO! HO! HOME for the holidays! Hi folks, my name is Bubba. It's Christmas at Dogwood Animal Shelter. I'm not exactly sure what all that entails, but I've heard something about being "naughty or nice" and some big, jolly guy watching every move you make. Just so you know, I've been a really good boy this year. I've been playing well with others, getting used to sharing my toys and food, and learning to walk on a leash (without chewing on the leash itself!). I'm about a year old, neutered, up-to-date on all my shots, microchipped and cute as a button! It just doesn't get any better than that. I was brought here to Dogwood a month or so ago because I got lost and couldn't find my way home. So now this is home, until that special someone comes along to take me home for the holidays. I'd love a home with room to run and maybe some kids to run around with. So stop on by and maybe take me for a little walk. Hope to see you soon.
Love, Bubba |

Happy Howlidays from Dogwood Animal Shelter! My name is Autumn and I keep hearing that Christmas is "just around the corner". Well, I've looked around every corner here at the shelter and cannot figure out what they're talking about! I'm not sure what I'm looking for because I've never heard of Christmas. In fact, I've never heard of any holidays. Before coming to the shelter with all my buddies, I was just left outside to kind of fend for myself. There were 10 of us that were all brought in at the same time and except for Lila (who was pregnant) and Reina (who was injured), I'm the last one to find a forever home. I just don't understand it...I'm a really sweet girl, about 8 months old, a little timid, but once I get to know you, I'll do just fine. I'm just looking for the right family, one who will be very understanding and patient with me. I have a lot of love to give and I don't ask much in return...just a nice, cozy place to lay my head, food, water, and toys....lots and lots of toys. OMG! I LOVE the kind with the squeakers in them! Anyway, if I sound like the kind of dog you might want to get to know a little better, come on down to the shelter. You may have to coax me out from under the desk, but really, I would love to take a walk with you. I'll just sit by the door and wait for you ...okay? |

I'm one of the four dogs that were abandoned at Dogwood's entrance gate a month or so ago. You probably heard about us – there was a reward offered for information about where we came from because we were in such bad shape. Sure wish we could talk! It was a great relief to get into Dogwood! We got soothing baths and medicine to help the crazy itching, as much food as we wanted, and our own warm room with soft bedding. We started feeling better pretty fast. After much TLC, we're starting to look almost as good as we feel! Our skin has cleared up (somewhat), our hair is coming back (slowly), and we're putting on weight (LOVIN' THE FOOD!). Two of us, the boys, are ready to be adopted right now! In a loving home atmosphere, they'll continue to get better looking every day! We two girls have to be spayed before going home – probably next week! We're really excited to think we may be playing and snuggling with our very own humans soon! Can you look past the "bad hair" recovery time and see the love we have to share with you?
Come visit us soon!

My name is Reina and I have an extra big THANK YOU to all of Dogwood's supporters! You see, I'd been abandoned at a trailer with about a dozen of my friends. After the trailer burned down, some good neighbors came to save us. They got my friends all settled in their car but didn't see me until they were about to drive off because I was by the side of the road, hurt bad and unable to move. Thank God they saw me before they left! As soon as we got to Dogwood, life started getting better! We got so much love and food, and all of our hurts and bruises started healing. Turned out, I had a broken pelvis and a broken leg, so I had surgery to fix my leg. My pelvis is healing on it's own with lots of bed rest. I'm almost as good as new! My cast is off and I'm allowed to play with my friends now! I can't be adopted until I'm spayed, but that's going to happen soon. I'm really looking forward to the next chapter of my life, with my own furever family to love! I hate to think where I'd be if it weren't for all you wonderful supporters of Dogwood! I can't get out and come to you, but you're sure welcome to come visit me here – I have lots of thank you kisses to give! Visitors here at Dogwood always walk away smiling!
Thanks again for caring!

So there I was, out on the road fending for myself, when a nice lady stopped, picked me up and brought me to Dogwood Animal Shelter. I'm pretty old and it was kinda cold out there, so I was sure glad to get in where it's warm and comfy and the nice folks feed me all I can eat. They love cuddling me too! They're calling me Moses – "He's as old as Moses!" I heard them say! My teeth were giving me problems so the nice doc tried to clean them. A lot of them fell out, so, as you can see from my picture, I now have a little trouble holding my licker! But I'll tell you what; I can chow down with the best of them (as long as it's soft food). And I feel better than I have in years! Now what I'm looking for is a nice quiet home with someone who wants a couch buddy (I'm really good at that). I like to go for walks, but prefer to keep them short, like my legs. I'm a little, bitty guy... 5.2 lbs. If all this is sounding too irresistible, you should get yourself right down to the shelter for a visit. And remember – November is "Adopt A Senior Pet Month – with a special $50 adoption fee for us old-timers! If you're thinking of bringing a new pal home for the holidays, now might be the time.
Hope to see you soon,
Moses |

Hello everyone. I'll bet you're wondering who this handsome, distinguished looking gentleman is. Well, let me introduce myself. My name is Teddy and I'm 7 years old. I was brought in with my mom and four brothers and sisters a really long time ago and have spent most of my life at the shelter. I was in a home for a couple of years, but I get kind of nervous around small kids so they brought me back. I'm fine with older kids, dogs, cats... just about anything but little kids. (I hate to admit it, but they scare me!) I would really love to be back in a home with a nice yard because I am housetrained and no matter how hard the people at the shelter try (and believe me they do try hard!), I just don't get out enough. And a nice soft bed for my old bones would be wonderful, too. So if I sound like just the kind of dog you might be looking for, come on down to the shelter this month. November is "Adopt a Senior Pet" month so my adoption fee is only $50. For everything you get with me, I can tell you that's quite a bargain! Hope to see you soon, Love,
Teddy |
 |
They call me Tater-Salad! I've been asked to tell you all that November is "Adopt a Senior Pet" month. That means that any dog over four years old or any cat that has been at the shelter more than two years is only $50 this month!
Now I'm not what I would consider a "senior", but I have been here at the shelter for quite a while - almost three and a half years! I'm the last of a litter of five that was abandoned at the shelter. I've grown up here, seen lots of cats and kittens come and go, and just keep waiting patiently for my turn. I was adopted once, but was only there for about a month. I hid from everybody all the time and I guess they just couldn't stand to see me unhappy. I wasn't really unhappy. It was just my first time in a real home and I wasn't sure how to act. But I think I've got it now and I really want another chance! I'll try not to be so shy this time. The folks here keep reassuring me that someone out there must be looking for a nice, quiet cat and that it's just a matter of time. Three and a half years seems like a looong time, but I'm very hopeful that I'll get my chance this month! Come see me please.
Love,
Tater |

Trick or treat everyone! I just love Halloween. Maybe because my name is Candy! I think they named me that because I'm so sweet. I'm also a very smart girl. Just ask my Canine Coaches....they'll tell you I know lots of commands like sit, down, come and shake. I'm just the friendliest girl, love to go out on the town and meet new people. I'm almost a year and a half old and have been at the shelter since last December. I have lots of friends here that I play with on the patio, but what I really dream of is a home of my very own with a YARD and GRASS! And a nice bed! And kids! That would be awesome! I'm kinda excitable when I first meet someone (did I mention that I love people), but I settle down pretty quick. I would really like to find a great home with kind, loving folks that I could call "mom" and "dad" and maybe a few "brothers" and "sister" (two legged or four legged, I don't mind). So stop on by Dogwood Animal Shelter and take me out for a spin. I'm guaranteed to win your heart.
Love,
Candy |

Hello, hello, hello, hello. We are affectionately known around here as "the hounds". We're told we're Treeing Walker Coonhounds, but I don't think we ever even seen a coon, much less walked up a tree to get one! But we do love love love to run and play. We're about 3 and a half months old now and have been at the shelter for a month. A kind lady found us in a box and brought us here to be cared for. We'd love a home with a nice big fenced yard for us to play in. We realize that we probably won't find a home that will take all of us, but what could be more fun that a barrel full of puppies!?! So come on by the shelter and take one or all of us for a walk...we're learning to walk on a leash so it will be good practice for us. And for the rest of the month of October, since it's "Adopt a Shelter Dog" month, our adoption fee is only $50 for the 2 boys since we've been fixed and the 2 girls are still broken so you would have to pay an additional $50 refundable deposit for their spay. We're all microchipped and are up to date on vaccinations.
Hope to see you soon,
Clark , Kent , Lois, and Layne
PS: October is "Adopt a Shelter Dog" month so our adoption fee is only $50. Just think, a wonderful dog (or two), unconditional love, and a great price.....what could be better?!?! |
 |
Hello everyone....I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Parker. I guess here at the shelter I would be known as a senior citizen. I'm almost 9 years old - and that's in people years! My story isn't as sad as some of the others I've heard since I've been here, but it's sad to me. My sister (Marley) and I were adopted out together as little puppies 8 years ago. We went to live with our new person on a big farm where we had lots of room to run and play. Unfortunately, he had to move into town about a year ago and did not have a place for us to go so we were brought back here. I really miss having the freedom to go where I want and enjoy the feel of grass under my feet, I mean paws. So if anyone out there is looking for a really good dog to just hang out and look after things for you, please consider me or my sister...we've got lots of experience. Plus we would be extremely grateful and shower you with lots of hugs and kisses.
PS: October is "Adopt a Shelter Dog" month so our adoption fee is only $50. Just think, a wonderful dog (or two), unconditional love, and a great price.....what could be better?!?! |

Hi folks! I'm here to announce ADOPT-A-DOG MONTH at Dogwood Animal Shelter!
Maybe you remember me – Nestle? (named for chocolate.....chocolate lab, get it?) I was the poster child for Dogwood Animal Shelter's first annual Fur-Ball. I was not at my best at that time - was still recovering from surgery on my leg. See, some kind folks found me after I had been hit by a car and brought me to the shelter. So the money from the Fur-Ball helped pay for the surgery that repaired my leg! I'm all better now – I get to play on the patio with all my new friends at the shelter. I sure enjoy that! I still limp a little, and that might never change. Don't let that stop you though because it sure doesn't stop me! I'm a friendly, happy guy who's waiting for my new family! And, during October, any of us who have been waiting for 30 days or more will only cost $50 to adopt! At least come for a visit - I sure do love the company! Hope to see you soon.
Love, Nestle |

Meet Sally
HI – I'm Sally and I'm kind of a big deal here at Dogwood. I've been here almost 4 years; I've got some seniority so I've chosen my own job. I'm in charge of security in the gift shop. In this picture, you can see I'm guarding the socks! I take my job pretty seriously. When I'm not busy protecting the merchandise though, I'm a very sweet girl and I LOVE LOVE LOVE to be petted! The "anniversary" of my coming here is September 24th - I sure hope to find my forever home before then! I'm no trouble at all to have around and I'll sure be happy to spend as much quality snuggle time with you as you want! I've heard that Dogwood's offering an extra low adoption price on all of us cats and kittens during September – just $50 - so I'm hoping this will be my lucky month. I hope to meet you soon!
Love, Sally |

Meet Winky
Hi! I’m Winky, or Uno – it depends on who you ask here at the shelter! I was brought here as part of Dogwood’s trap/neuter/release program, so I was really just supposed to be “fixed”, then go back to being a free cat. But when Dogwood’s clinic staff saw how infected my eye was, they asked if they could keep me. I had to give up my freedom, but it’s been worth it because my eye really had been pretty darn painful. Medicine wouldn’t cure it, so they arranged for it to be removed. I feel loads better now! I get free run of the office & all the food I want. I’ve adjusted well and life is really good! I like it here well enough, but here’s one thing; I know that if someone adopts me, Dogwood would have space to take in another homeless cat who may be suffering. I need to be an inside cat now since I only have one eye, but I have great manners and would be a loyal and affectionate companion in return for the hospitality! Come & visit me and the rest of the gang....the adoption fee for cats and kittens this month is only $50.
See you soon,
Winky |

Meet Our Spotted Kittens
Think you're seeing spots?! This bunch of black and white spotted kittens at Dogwood Animal Shelter is always up for a good time! We like to tease the folks here - darting all over the place until .....you guessed it.... all they see are spots! Life here is great compared to life before we came here, but really – we'd love a little space of our own. Our roommates are fun, but it's pretty crowded in the kitten room here. When a visitor comes, we all get really excited and act like a bunch of clowns & acrobats, trying to get our fair share of attention and petting! We'd just like a nice person of our own for a change. Guess everyone in here would say the same. We're five months old, beautiful, playful, microchipped, and fixed, (which is really cool, because who wants a broken cat?) And for the month of September our adoption fee is only $50. Adopt two of us and the second one is only $25! Where else can you go to get such fun entertainment (and stylish lap warmers) for such a reasonable price? We have our hopes up and will look forward to seeing you in our kitten room. You'll have a blast!
Love, Jasper, Donzi, Tawney & Baxter

Meet Baby Girl
I’ve lived at the shelter longer than any other cat and almost all of the dogs, since January of ’06. I was a very, very sick stray, found in a ditch at a condo complex. That’s how I became blind in my one eye. But… don’t let my yucky eye fool you! My name is Baby Girl and I’ve been told I’m an 8 year-old sweetie, a real cutie. You just have to see beyond that eye, like I’ve learned to do. I’m not allowed to have treats or human food… makes my tummy tumble. Otherwise, I’m right as rain! I’m calm and snuggly, AND I’m very picky clean about my litter box and bedding. No messed up stuff in MY place. I’m up for adoption, but I can’t live up front in the adoption area, so you might not have seen me.
Uhhhh… you see… I’m in trouble because I love to sleep on the computer and take strolls on the keyboard. Well, they always say "stupid, slow computer", so I don’t see what difference it makes. Anyway, I’m living in the clinic, where it’s nice and quiet. But, I’d love to be in a home where I could get belly rubs, ear scratches, and a family to take care of. For me, my eye may be blind, but my love isn’t.

Meet Kelly and Her Puppies
SSHHH.....the babies are finally quiet. And I'm exhausted! All you moms out there surely understand how tiring a little one can be. Multiply that by 8!!!
Oh, how I wish my old owners had gotten me spayed--then I wouldn't be in this predicament.
My name is Kelly and I was brought to Dogwood Animal Shelter because I was out running the streets and no one wanted me. When I got to the shelter and they checked me out, much to my dismay (and theirs), they discovered I was pregnant.
So here I am, only about a year and a half old, and taking care of eight babies! The folks at the shelter are helping as much as they can, and I don't even want to think how hard it would have been to take care of them on my own. Here, at Dogwood, I have a warm dry bed, food in my belly and - although my babies may have been unwanted - at least now they're safe from harm.
I am pleading to ALL pet owners out there......SPAY and NEUTER,,,,PLEASE! I've joined the shelter folks in their dreams about a time when there is no such thing as an unwanted puppy!
Love, Kelly |

Meet Blake
Hello everyone! No, this isn't a "before" picture for a weight loss program. It's me, Blake, in all my glory! I've kind of let myself go, physically, but I like to consider myself "full figured" or "fluffy". I'm big, handsome as can be, sweet and gentle with all creatures, housebroken and very obedient. My younger "brother" Charlie and I were brought to the shelter recently and had to be separated here 'cuz he's a lot smaller than me. I miss him ALOT and am struggling with some depression now. Because of my size, I don't fit well in a kennel so I have to stay in a special room and get fed a special diet food. Can you believe that!?! I do love the extra attention, but I would really like to be just a normal dog doing normal dog things. Of course, my long term goal is to find that special someone who has room in their heart and home for a calm couch potato dog. For now though, I'm asking you folks to please help me through my depression and my weight problem by coming to Dogwood and taking me for a walk. Ask for me, Blake. Just a 15 minute walk with you would help lift my spirits! I really need you…please.
Blake |
 |
Meet Charlie
Hi everyone....my name is Charlie. I'm kinda new here at the shelter so I'm still sort of figuring things out. It was scary at first because I've always been in a home with my big brother Blake and now we're separated, with Blake in the kennel and me in the front. But I have lots of new friends here, both cats and dogs, and the people are really nice! They even gave me a really cool haircut (I was a little shaggy before). But it would be great to be back in a home of my own, even better if Blake could come, too, but I know that would be asking a lot because he's a big dog. I'm only three years old, housetrained, good with kids and really, really cute....the total package! What more could anyone ask for?!?! So come by the shelter for a visit...maybe you could take me and Blake for a walk together...I'd really like that and I know he would, too.
Hope to see you soon,
Love, Charlie |

Meet Trudy
Hello Everyone. My name is Trudy. I'm one of the "seniors" here at Dogwood Animal Shelter. Not that I've been here very long, but I am 6 and a half years old. I've seen a lot of life, let me tell you. I was picked up as a stray wandering the streets of Osage Beach and brought to the shelter. But I've not always been a stray....I remember living with someone in a nice cozy home, still remember the rules about not pottying in the house or chewing up stuff that doesn't belong to me. But somehow I ended up on the streets (through no fault of my own - I really am a very good girl). I'm grateful to the folks at the shelter for helping me search for another home, hopefully my forever home because I'm ready to settle down for good. Really, I'm not much trouble at all. In fact, I'll be perfectly happy to curl up and rest in your lap most of the time. So if you're looking to share your life with someone who's mature and low maintenance, not to mention really cute, I just may be the girl for you. Come by for a visit and maybe a little walk, if it's not too hot. I'll be here waiting.
Love, Trudy |

Meet Lucky
Hello everyone.... My name is Lucky. You might not think so when you hear my story, but I truly am LUCKY. My owner of many, many years passed away and I had nowhere to go so I got brought to the shelter. I've got a few strikes against me....I'm 15 or 16 years old (I can't EVEN add that high in dog years!). I've got a few health problems (I'll tell you about them when we meet....they're kinda personal)...and I don't get around as well as I used to.
On the flip side, I do have my winning smile, which I bring out on special occasions, and lots of love to give still.
But things are starting to look up... I'm here at Dogwood Animal Shelter getting the best care and attention from these nice people. They make sure I get plenty of food and walks since I am housebroken and don't like to make mistakes. And I get to stay inside on these hot days, which I really appreciate (us old dogs don't tolerate the heat very well).
So come on down and visit with me... I love to make new friends. Maybe, just maybe, one of my new friends will open their heart and their home to an elderly, distinguished gal like me.
Hope to see you soon,
Love, Lucky |

Meet Road Runner
Hi everyone, my name is Road Runner as in "running the roads" which was what I was doing when I got brought to the shelter almost 5 years ago. I've got to tell you, I've seen a lot of changes over the years.....lots of dogs coming and going .... and I'm still here. I was a cute pup when all this started out, but now I'm a handsome young man. I'm not the oldest guy at the place, but I'd sure like to find my forever home before I get that way. I don't want to brag, but I've got alot going for me. I'm handsome (did I mention that already?), and I do have some manners once you get me out of my kennel. The Canine Coaches have worked with me alot and I've been out on the town with some of the volunteers, so I know how it feels to roll around in the grass and would sure love to feel that again. I also love the water so a home on the lake would be perfect. I have lots of doggie friends here, so a home with other dogs would be great! Well, I guess that's about it for me for now. I would like to invite all of you down for a visit and some fun in our new fenced in play area. Hope to see you soon.
Love, Road Runner |

Meet Scout
Dear God, it's me, Scout. I'm praying that you will bring that special someone to the shelter who will appreciate a shy guy like me. This person will have to be VERY patient and loving with me. I can't tell you why exactly I'm so shy, but everyone here is trying to help me get over this. I have gotten better, but I have a long way to go, so this special person will have to understand if it takes me a while to warm up to them. But when I do warm up, I'm as loving as I can be. I may even do the "Scoutie Dance" for you (my signature move where I stand on my hind legs and dance around.) So please God, make it soon, because I have a lot of love to give to the right person. They just have to find me. (Hint - I'll be hiding under the desk at Dogwood Animal Shelter.)
Amen |

Meet the Puppies
Eeny, meeny, miney, moe......which one of these puppies wants to go? You can take your pick of any of the adorable puppies at Dogwood Animal Shelter. We all lined up for this mug shot, but we're sure you can tell from looking at us that we are all very good boys and girls and really don't deserve to be in "jail". The only reason we're in here is because our moms weren't spayed and we were brought into this world and then abandoned. Not a great start for a little one, but things have looked up for us since we came to the shelter. We get lots of love and toys and play time with each other. Not to mention lots of food and treats. We've had all our vaccinations and some of the boys have already been fixed (didn't know they were broken)and we're microchipped so we'll never be lost again. Won't you pleeeeeeze come down and "spring" one of us....we'll be your new best friend forever...promise.
Love and puppy kisses from all of us. |

Meet Pebbles and Kitties
"Hey, are you our long lost sister? We're just one big, happy family." (Pebbles -the dog, meets some of her "brothers" at Dogwood Animal Shelter, Jordan and Monty the cats, in the cat room.) Even though they're not technically brothers and sister, they all get along here at the shelter. Just like they would get along with everyone in your family. Monty and Jordan have been here since they were little kittens, over two years ago. And since this is the last week for Adopt a Shelter Cat Month, their adoption fee is only $50 or your could take them both for $80. Pebbles is only a puppy, but she sure would like to be in a forever home soon. Her adoption fee is $75 plus $50 spay deposit that will be refunded when she is spayed in a couple of weeks. They are waiting, just like lots of other cats and dogs, and puppies and kittens, for someone just like you to welcome them into your family. |

Meet Freedom
Pssst...Hi it's me...Freedom. And that's just what I'm hoping for... not that things here at the shelter aren't great, it's just that I would like a little more freedom. Maybe go outside once in a while to smell the flowers (but I would have to come back in so I can share the couch with you). It sure is crowded here in the Kitten Room as you can see, and while I love my friends and family, I cannot think of anything better than to have a family to call my very own. So if you're looking to add a wonderful, furry, cuddly creature to your family, you might come by the shelter and check us out. There are lots to choose from, all sizes and colors just waiting for you to fall in love with. And since our adoption fee is only $50 for the rest of the month of June, you could take two for only $80! I would be willing to share my new family with whoever you pick from my old family. So stop by the Kitten Room at Dogwood Animal Shelter, but be prepared to fall in love at first sight...we're irresistible. Betcha can't take just one!
Love,
Freedom |

Meet Frank
Look into my eyes.....now repeat after me....."I have to take this cat home with me today." Can you feel it? The urge to get in your car, drive to Dogwood Animal Shelter, and ask for Frank the cat. I live here at the shelter in the cat room with a bunch of my good friends, but I would love to be in a home, especially one where I can work my magic on you with my big green eyes and get you to give me all the love (and treats) I want, anytime I want it! Would that be great, or what? And since it's "Adopt a Shelter Cat Month", my adoption fee is only $50! I'm almost three years old and have been here since I was a baby, so don't you think that it's been long enough that the folks at the shelter have enjoyed my company? I DO! So come on down for a visit...I will put you under my spell. Love, Frank |

Meet the Kitty Committee
Hi everyone....it's the itty, bitty, kitty committee comin' at ya from Dogwood Animal Shelter. I guess you can tell from the pictures that's there are plenty of us to choose from. It's a good thing we're all such good friends since it's a little crowded in the kitten room and there's a waiting list to get in this place! Thankfully, June is ADOPT A SHELTER CAT MONTH (our adoption fee is only $50) so maybe some of us will be going to a new home soon. I'm sure it will be real nice to have a home that I don't have to share with quite so many roommates. Some of us were born here and others were brought in without mommas, but each and every one of us would love to find a home to call our own. You could be just the person we're looking for! So why don't you come by the shelter and give us a chance to show you how darn cute we can be. If you're having trouble making up your mind, you could always take two...the wonderful people at the shelter love us, but they would make you a heck of a deal ($30 for the 2nd cat). Now, we're not old enough to have been spayed or neutered (whatever that means!) so there would be an additional $50 deposit, but you would get that back when we're fixed and then you could go out and spend it all on us anyway! So stop by and visit the Kitten Room....I'm the cute one!
Love, The Kitty Committee |

Meet Dartanian
Hello friends....my name is Dartanian (Dart for short). This is a picture of me hanging with my best bud, Comet. I'm the handsome one on the left. I'm a little sad these days cuz Comet just got adopted this week. Good for him! I guess I'm just wondering when it will be my turn to go to a home. I haven't been here at the shelter all that long, and the guys and gals here are as nice as they can be, but I've experienced what it's like to live in a house with a family that loves you and I would like to have it again. And to make your decision even easier, June is "ADOPT A SHELTER CAT" month so I could be warming your lap tonight for the low, low cost of $50! I am current on all vaccination, neutered, microchipped and ready for just about anything. They even let me be an office kitty since I'm so friendly. I get along with everyone (even dogs!) so there's nothing standing in the way of me becoming the newest member of your family. Come by and check me out...I think you'll like what you see!
Love, Dartanian

Meet Buzz
Hi everyone...it's me Buzz. You probably don't recognize me from my earlier pic...I'm all grown up. OK, so I'm really still just a pup, a blue heeler mix. But the thing is, I got too big to stay up front with the other (as in smaller) pups so I got moved to the kennel with the big dogs...older, more experienced, and did I mention BIG? Now I may not be the smallest dog out here (like Dolly), but I AM the youngest and let me tell you it's a little scary. And all because I grew...and grew, something that just can't be helped. But I'm only five and a half months old so I really do think it's time for me to find a home. All my brothers and sisters have been adopted....WHY NOT ME? I'm a really good guy.. smart, trainable, loyal, and, judging from my picture, drop dead gorgeous! So whenever you're in the neighborhood, stop by and tell the great folks at the shelter that you "want to see Buzz and take him for a walk"....right out the door and into your heart! I'll be waiting....
Love, Buzz

Meet The Puppies & Kittens
Greetings from Dogwood Animal Shelter! The spring fling is in full swing! We're just a few of the puppies and kittens that have been brought to the shelter in the last couple of weeks. Most of us were abandoned by our mothers and had nowhere else to turn. Thankfully, the people here at the shelter have given us a nice, dry, comfy place to lay our heads until we find our forever homes. But, there are many more like us out there that do not have this luxury. We would like to take this opportunity to urge everyone out there to spay and neuter your pets so there won't be so many puppies and kittens for us to compete with for great homes. We're cute, we're cuddly and we're more fun than a barrel of monkeys. Really....how much fun is a barrel of monkeys? So come by and see for yourself...we've got lots of love to offer.

Meet Cooper
Hi folks.....my name is Cooper. You probably don't recognize me without the "cone of shame". Well, I'm happy to tell you that I have recovered completely from the injuries I suffered last winter. Thanks to all the folks at the shelter and Dr. Tom for the wonderful care I've been given. I've been moved from the clinic to the kennel and have made TONS of new friends. I get to go out on the patio and hang with them and enjoy this wonderful weather. Life sure is good.....the only thing that would make it better would be a forever home to share with someone. I'm an out-doorsy kind of guy and love to go for long walks on the beach, moonlit strolls.....wait, that's my doggiematch.com profile. But all kidding aside, I am a very lovable guy that just needs a home to call my own. I've heard from some of my kennel-mates that they have been here for a long time and I sure don't want that to happen to me. Come by and see me sometime....I may be just what you're looking for!
Love,
Cooper

Meet Venus & Family
Hello everyone! It's my very first Mother's Day! My name is Venus and, if I look a little tired, it's because I'm a new mom... and all you moms out there know how tiring that can be! On top of having four kids, I had to have a C-section due to complications during delivery. You'd never know it from the picture, but these little guys are just one day old. I am just one of the new moms here at the shelter. All of us in the maternity ward came in pregnant because someone didn't take the time to have us spayed. I am so grateful that I have a nice, clean, dry place to sleep with my babies and plenty of food to eat. There are so many others like me that do not have all the niceties of home that I have. I can only imagine what their lives are like, having to scrounge for food AND take care of their babies. Thank goodness I don't have to worry about anything other than recovering from my surgery and taking care of the kids. I want to give a big THANKS to everyone at the shelter for all the love and kindness that each and every one of the animals here gets. And for going the extra mile with me when I needed it (thanks Dr. Jay). AND a huge THANK YOU to everyone who donates to the shelter and thrift store for making all this possible. Remember .....SPAY AND NEUTER YOUR PETS! Thanks! Love, Venus |

Meet Vivi
Hello to all my friends....it's me, Vivi, reporting live from Dogwood Animal Shelter. The big news here at the shelter is that April is Big Black Dog Awareness Month. That means any big black dog that has been here for more than 30 days (like me!) is just $50 to adopt. The adoption fee includes all my vaccinations, I'm already spayed, and microchipped. I was found about two years ago running around behind HyVee with my friend Violet. Since then, I have been hanging out here with my friends, going to school (the canine coaches have worked with me alot and it shows), and waiting for just the right person to come along that would appreciate a full figured gal like me. I do have one requirement for the people who choose to share their home with me.....you MUST be willing to give lots of tummy rubs! I just LOVE dem tummy rubs! So come by the shelter and let me show you my stuff. Hope to see you.
Love, Vivi |

Meet Babe
Hi Babe....oh, you're talking to me! That's MY name. I'm one of the Big Black Dogs here at Dogwood. I have been here since I was a little girl. Not that I'm that old now.. I just turned a year old in March , so really I'm still a puppy at heart. And boy do I have heart! I'm a really sweet girl, I just need someone to take me home and bring out all my finer qualities. I live next door to my sister, Chelsea, but I think it's time one of us moved out and found our own place. And I'm hoping that since my adoption fee for the month of April is only $50, that that someone is ME. I would totally understand if someone wanted my sister or even one of the other big dogs here at the shelter.....all I'm asking is that you give us a chance to show you what great companions we can be. Life is always better when it's shared with a four legged friend! Hope to see you soon.
Love, Babe

Meet Doc
What's up, doc? Oh wait, that's me! Doc, from Dogwood. I'm almost 5 years old and have been here since I was a little puppy. I came in with six brothers and sisters. They named us all after the Seven Dwarfs and I guess I got the name Doc cuz I'm really smart. I'm also a little shy, but I'm starting to come out of my shell. The wonderful people that come in and volunteer with the Canine Coaches say I'm doing better with all my commands and walking on a leash. So, as you can see, I've got a lot going for me. I'm tall, dark and handsome....and I'm also cheap! No, not how you're thinking...I'm one of the Big Black Dogs that is available for $50 for the month of April. Any black dog that has been here for over 30 days is only $50 to adopt...that includes all my vaccinations, I'm neutered and microchipped...the total package! So I hope to see you soon and, if you and I are not the perfect fit, maybe one of my friends will be. We're all just looking for love!

Meet Emily
Hi ya’ll… Emily here - reporting from Dogwood Animal Shelter. With my exceptional antennae ears, I hear all the gossip around here. And the word going ‘round the kennels is that it’s “Big Black Dog Awareness Month” here at the shelter. Now I’m particularly interested in this fact as I am a big black dog. (Although being the lady that I am, I prefer to be called “well built “not “big”!) I am almost 5 years old and have been at the shelter since I was a pup. I was brought in with my eight siblings and ALL of them have found their forever homes. My sister Louisa was the last one to go and that was in December ‘09. Since then, I have been hopeful that someone special would come for me, but I got to tell you, as time went by, I was beginning to feel that that special someone just isn’t out there. There are just so many of us to choose from! Did you know that 68% of the big black dogs here at the shelter have been here for at least 2 years! But, I'm feeling pretty good about my chances now because for the month of April, any adult black dog that has been here for more than 30 days will only cost you $50 to adopt. I TOTALLY QUALIFY FOR THIS PROMOTION! So I hope to see you soon.

Meet Frank
Hi everyone…my name is Frank….as in "FRANKly I'm ready to get out of here!". I have been here at the shelter since I was a little kitten, waaaaaay back in October of 2008. I was abandoned at the shelter in a box with my sister. How's that for a sad story. But unfortunately, that happens more often than you think. But on to a happier subject…ME! As you can tell from the picture, I am a very relaxed, laid back kind of guy. I have been promoted to "Office Kitty" because of my winning personality. The job is great…all I have to do is lay around all day, chase and play with the dogs, and look cute. For that I'm paid with lots of love and attention, kibble, a warm bed and all the toys I want! What a life! The only thing that could be better would be a forever home where I could perform all my "duties" just for YOU! Hope to see you soon. |
 |
Meet The Puppies
Hi everybody…..we're the GRRReatest! At least we'd like to think so. Great Pyrenees mixes is what the nice people here at the shelter were told when we were brought in. Mom's taste in men must run to the larger breeds, cuz she's not that big a gal herself. There are six of us left from a litter of eight so it's still a little crowded. While it's nice to have someone to snuggle with, it sure would be nice to have a bed to myself once in a while. Then I could snuggle with you whenever you wanted! We're a "large-boned" bunch ( as you can see from the picture) and we're only 3 months old, so we're gonna need a home with room to roam. If you're looking for a big, fluffy, cuddle-bug, then I'm your guy (or gal). |
 |
Meet Dallas
You'll find me over yonder at Dogwood Animal Shelter, jes' waitin' fer a nice home to nestle myself in! I'm a patient dude, so I'm not frettin'...yet. But I have been here awhile. In fact, this picture of me is from when I was still a kid - about 8 or 9 months ago. Proud to say I've filled out a bit since then. I'm a pretty good-lookin' guy now! Name's Dallas, but you can call me Dal, or you can call me Dallie, or you can call me sweeter 'n magnolia blossoms on a sunny June mornin'. Truth be told, everybody loves me - canine coaches, staff, & volunteers! Flock around me like flies on honey, like skeeters on sweat, like...well...you get the picture. I reckon I like all the brushin', the pettin', the cuddlin'. If that makes me sissified, so be it. Makes me no nevermind who's doin' it - youngins, bigguns, critters like me. I love 'em all! Can't be helpin' that I'm so handsome, smart, and here's the best part - I'm gettin' on to that house trainin' thing! Much as I like it here, I know that if I move out, there'll be room for some other poor critter to move in and get the lovin' care he or she needs. So come take me for a walk, maybe take me home how 'bout? See ya soon! |

Meet Buzz
I'm blue. Blue Heeler, that is. Mama was a tramp, seriously. And a survivor! A big boned Blue Heeler mix, gettin' by on her own. Stopped at a farm in her wanderings and stayed long enough to birth us 5 babies there. Once we were weaned, she took off again, left us behind. Nice lady at the farm took us to Dogwood Animal Shelter about a month ago, and now we're all shaped up, ready to go home with somebody and start havin' some fun! We're just 10 weeks old, full of playfulness! We'll try our best to pay attention and be good though. We promise!
Oh, and just so you know… Mama ended up comin' back to the farm to see about us. She got "fixed" and the nice lady's gonna let her stay there forever. Guess she decided it was time to settle down after all!

Meet Cooper
Hi…Cooper “The Conehead” here. I am really embarrassed to have my picture in the paper with “the cone of shame” around my head, but I’m afraid I’m stuck with this for the next few weeks. Ya see, I was hit by a car on February 5th and left on the side of Highway 54 with a badly broken leg. I am very grateful for the nice young man who stopped and picked me up and brought me to the shelter! I could have frozen to death out there! They took me to a really kind man they called Dr. Tom and he fixed me right up, but I know I’m going to have a looooong recovery. I heard the nice folks at the shelter talking about how much all my medical care was going to cost, but they also said that they would somehow find a way. They are all just so thankful that I’m going to be OK and they have faith that the bills will all be paid…WOW! I understand that I won’t be available for adoption right away, but I hope and pray that someone will come in and visit me and decide that I’m the perfect dog for them! Right now I’m just grateful I’ve got a warm place to sleep, food in my belly and I don’t hurt anymore! THANK YOU…THANK YOU…THANK YOU!

THIS BABY CAN HAVE BABIES OF HER OWN...

Lila is a female and is 6 months old; she was also abandoned and is looking for love. When Lila was brought to the shelter she was too young to eat by herself so she was bottle feed and cared for. Lila has a beautiful Black and Brown Torti color. |
 |
Manny is a male and is 6 months old, he was abandoned and is looking for that special someone to take him home and just love him. Manny has Black long hair and amber eyes. |
 |
Hello. My name is Kate. Last week, you met my daughter Giselle. I just wanted to take a moment and let you all know how much I appreciate you taking the time to listen to her story. I am so thankful that the shelter is offering such a wonderful special this month to help my babies find great homes. However, there is only about a week left to get a black puppy for only $50! I'm getting nervous, you know? There are still 5 of my children waiting to find their furever homes. While I am doing fine in the kennels, it would just completely break this mother's heart to see my little ones have to come back here because they have gotten too big or too old to be up front. I am just thrilled that we are no longer wandering around in the woods fighting every day to survive. At 3 years old myself, I can easily cope with the fact that I may never get another chance at having a loving family of my own, but my pups shouldn't have to think those thoughts! It is not their fault that no one ever got me spayed before I got pregnant. I think being spayed now has given me some inner peace...I will never have to worry like this again. So, if you've been considering opening your heart and home to a new furry family member, PLEASE consider one of my beautiful little babes... you won't regret it! Mommies promise!
Thanks!
Kate |
 |
You are about to be impressed! My name is Giselle. Wanna know why I'm so unique? I am a completely black dog! That's right...no white spots, no brown spots, no stripes anywhere! 100% beautiful black dog. Some of you may not know that being all black is rare, but trust me, it is! Especially at a shelter! Anyway, me and my 7 siblings and our mom, Kate, (yeah...Kate plus 8, real original, right?) were brought to Dogwood a few weeks ago. We had wondered around the woods taking care of ourselves, but it just got to be too much for mom. So, we wandered onto a farm seeking some assistance. Thank goodness we ended up here! 7 of us are females! Just imagine how many more babies would end up wandering around in the woods if we hadn't come here and gotten spayed! Geesh!!! Hurts my head just thinking about it! Here's the cool part: the bigger black dogs out in the kennels pulled the manager aside and reminder her that April is Big Black Dog Syndrome Awareness Month. You see, those of them that have been here a long time look forward to April in hopes of finally getting discovered by their fur-ever family. The problem is, when there are adorable "little" black dogs up front (like me!), the kennel dogs don't even get looked at! So, in trying to be proactive for the big guys, any "little" Big Black Dogs can be adopted for only $50 in January!! Woo-hoo! I can just feel it in my heart that I'll be going home soon! There are only 5 of us black (ish) puppies available, so don't dawdle! Get here right now! We are already spayed/neutered, up-to-date on shots, and micro-chipped. Heck of a deal if you ask me, but I am young, so what do I know?! |
 |
Kittens, kittens, who's got the kittens?! Do you have the kittens? Does she have the kittens? Maybe he has the kittens! Noooo...DOGWOOD has the kittens! Here we are! Right here where we've always been! Need some homes us kittens do. We like it here all right, but some of us would prefer, no need, to be THE ONE for someone. Maybe you? We have a lot of fun all day long, but it really is time to explore a new place. They give us new toys and new scratching post and climb arounds, but never new walls to look at! Seriously...if we don't get a change of scenery soon, they'll need to pad the walls so we don't get hurt when we start bouncing off them. So, come on in...take a look around and let us introduce ourselves to you. You're sure to find just the right little furry friend, we promise. And for only $65, you can't go wrong. The door's always open..
Dogwood's Itty, Bitty, Kitties! |

Happy New Year!!!!
Hey everybody, It's Thunder comin' attchya! Just wanted to fill you all in on the fantastic year we had here at the shelter! We were able to help over 1,000 homeless pets this year! We actually took in 660 new animals, adopted out 681, and spayed & neutered over 2,000 pets! What a banner year! We know that we would not have been able to do so much without the help and support of folks like you! So...without further ado...THANKS A BUNCH!!! Not only were we able to do all of that, but let's take a look back down memory lane and see what else you all did for us:
- In February, you helped us put almost $500 into our spay/neuter assistance fund at our "spay-ghetti" luncheon (hope to see you again in 2011 at Lil' Rizzo's for a "spay-ghetti" dinner!)
- In March, 29 of our Big Black Dogs found homes during Big Black Dog Syndrome Awareness Month
- In April, thanks to your generosity, Izzy, Sasha, AND Bucky were able to get life-changing surgeries!!!
- In June, 29 (must be a good number!) cats & kittens found fur-ever homes during Adopt a Shelter Cat month, the shelter was able to fix the A/C in the kennel (a big personal THANKS on that one!), AND fun was had by all at the Canine Cannonball held at Dog Days Bar & Grilll. The Chevy's Bar & Grill's Golf Tournament rounded out June well! In August, ya'll came to Remi's rescue and made sure she had all the surgeries she needed after being shot in the face! (ouch!), and you also showed how much you care for all of us at our Culver's Pancake Breakfast in honor of National Homeless Animals Day
- In October, not only did you come visit during our Open House/Fall Festival, 41 of our homeless dogs & puppies found new homes during Adopt a Shelter Dog Month (man! you guys rock!)
- Speaking of Rockin', the Osage Beach Middle School kids rocked out a whoppin' fundraiser for us too! 2 Senior pets found new homes during November which was Adopt a Senior Pet month,
- And, in December, our Pajama Breakfast at On The Rise Bakery & Bistro, along with the silent auction, got us through the end of 2010 with a smile on our faces. In addition, your many gifts of items, money and treats were wonderful end of the year blessings!
In other words...
THANKS FOR A WONDERFUL 2010, AND MAY 2011 BRING YOU MANY BLESSINGS!!!

Merry Christmas from Bernie "the Bear!"
Well hello everybody!!! My name is Bernie, but everyone at the shelter calls me Bernie the Bear because I am so fuzzy-wuzzy...
Anyway, I just wanted to wish you all a Merry Christmas because it's my first one ever! I'm only 7 weeks old and I am sooo excited! The other dogs told me to be good and look cute and I'll have a good chance at getting my furever home just in time for Christmas. I've been trying REALLY hard, but today is Thursday and the shelter is closed tomorrow and Saturday. This radio show with these awesome guys is my last chance! So, what I want to tell you is this...I'm cuter than you can imagine, I'm a fun-loving future ball fetcher, I am already aware that I am not suppose to go potty on the floor (I'm just a little confused about where I am suppose to go, so I need some help with that, ok?), I enjoy being outside every once in a while, I play nice with the other dogs, and I am a snuggler! Really, what else do you need? I'm more entertaining than an Ipod, you won't need a controller to play with me, and, truth be told, I am waaaay better than any dumb ol' Christmas kitten! Seriously! So, please, stop by the shelter today (it's my last chance before Christmas) and take me home already!
Thanks,
Bernie (the Bear)

8 whole pounds of love comin' attcha! Hi! I'm Deacon and I'm a rough and tumble kinda guy...in my own head. It's my belief that I'm the biggest, toughest, lovin-est dude at the shelter. I may only be 3 months old, but I can teach you a thing or two, I'm sure. I found my own way to someone's door when I was abandoned, so I'm pretty resouceful. I know how to make the ladies at the shelter shower me with love and treats, and I even got my own sweater when I shivered in front of one of them. I know how to play the game, so training ain't nothin' but a thing to me! Tell me what ya want, I'll make it happen. Also, I currently have quite a few friends available for adoption at the shelter. So, if I'm too much to handle, come check out my compadres!
Thanks,
Deacon

Look, I know that God did not make any ugly puppies, but you've got to admit that I'm about the cutest one you've ever seen! I mean seriously, I should be given a spotlight! I've got it all...a low profile, strong legs, a perfect head, and a smile that can improve anyone's day! I'm a Basset mix! No better dog anywheres, I swear! Being a whole 3 1/2 months old, I know these things, as I'm a wordly guy. They listed me as a stray, but really I'm just a traveler. I ain't complainin' though, it was gettin' kinda cold out on the road. So listen, if you're looking for a little buddy who will follow you anywhere your heart desires, I'm your guy. Oh, and if you could come get me before Christmas, that would be GREAT! I hear that some dogs get their very own stockings hung over the fire. I could go for that!
See you soon,
Mater

My name is Jilli, but you can call me "yours." (he-he, I made a joke!) Me and my sister Lexi were wandering around in the country not too long ago. During our travels, we started to get a little cold, so we walked up to a farmhouse and guess what we found? A wonderful old, warm lab! Warm being the key word there. So, we curled up with him and slept through the whole night! The next morning the lab's momma found us still curled up with her baby. Oh, we flirted with her something fierce, but alas, here we are at the shelter. She really wanted to keep us, and cried big ol' tears when she left us, but her hands were already full! We considered writing letters to Santa and asking him for a home for the holidays, but not having thumbs makes letter writing difficult, not to mention the fact that we're only 5 months old! We flipped a coin, and I (Jilli) get to come to the Coyote Station today and plead our case. Please come visit us and consider making us part of your family. We really are good girls and Christmas miracles do happen you know!
See ya!

Hmmm...describe myself in three words or less? Old, fat, & happy! How do you like that? My name Kyra and I am 8 years old. Unlike most cats, I am pretty low maintenance! I just want a warm place to rest my paws. Oh, and by the way, those paws are de-clawed! I'm really too old to ruin any furniture anyways! I have been told that it's pretty hard to find a face cuter than mine. Makes me feel pretty special, you know? I know I'm some sort of tiger tabby mix, but my silver color confuses some people as well as my mushy face! I enjoy a little bit of snuggling, but only on my terms...I'll let you know when, deal? Admitting my weakness, I am a little shy at first just because I was surrendered after being in a home. My first family was unable to take care of me anymore and I am scared about getting attached again. I know you'll understand. Anyway, it's Adopt a Senior Pet Month so I thought I would put myself out there and see if I can't get a new home in time for the holidays! No better use for $50 bucks! I promise!

Hello!
My name is Dolly and I'm a senior pet! Although I am 7 years old, I recently had a litter of pups! I am tired! Being a mom is probably the best thing I've ever done, but truthfully, at my age, I'm glad I am now spayed. You may remember seeing a couple of my babies a few weeks ago...Andre & Jewel? Guess what? All four of my babies are still waiting for adoption. I can't believe it! Did you not see their faces? Pups don't get any cuter. Well, November is Adopt a Senior Pet month and I'm suppose to talk to you about all of us older pets here waiting for adoption. For only $50 you get a companion who is already spayed or neutered, up-to-date on all vaccinations, and micro-chipped. Quite the great deal if you ask me! I would like to leave you with this thought...if you don't think a senior pet is the way to go, would you PLEASE consider one of my babies?
Thanks for listening!

Hello! I'm Moppet...I visited with you all back in June, but since I'm still here at the shelter, I thought I would give it one more shot! You see, November is Adopt a Senior Pet month! That means that any cat or dog 5 years or older can be adopted for only $50. No better deal anywhere. Spay/neuter has already been taken care, all of our shots are up-to-date, and everyone at the shelter has a micro-chip! Now, honestly, I am only about 2 1/2 years old, but because I have been at Dogwood for over 2 years now, they are allowing me to be included in the special! Isn't that awesome? The staff are always looking for ways to help us find our furever homes, ya know? I was abandoned at the shelter over 2 years ago with my four siblings. I am the only one left and it's hard for me to understand. I am a mellow kind of girl who enjoys the sunshine and little bit of loving every now and then. I am never demanding and get along well with everybody. I just know that if you give me a chance I will be able to fit right into your life and add that little something extra you've been looking for! Please come soon, I would love to spend the holidays with my very own family!
Thanks! |

Uh...HELLO?! It's Addie again! I'm really having trouble believing that I am STILL HERE!!!! Not only am I the absolute cutest dog here, I'm also the smartest! I mean really...it's not rocket science...come get me already! I have had three homes and been brought back 3 times! Wanna know what's really not fair...? Not once was it my fault that I got brought back. All three times I was brought back because the adopters had health issues! One was allergic and two ended up in the hospital! If it wasn't for bad luck, I wouldn't have any luck at all. When I was found in a Walmart parking lot by a wonderful lady, I figured I must be a pretty lucky girl...not any more! Do you blame me? I've learned to sit, stay, walk on a leash, fetch a toy, but to what end? To end up in the kennels with the big dogs? I refuse to perform just for someone's entertainment! Truly it should be me who gets entertained! Shame on me, but I got excited when I heard October was adopt a shelter dog month. Well, it's almost over and here I still sit! Whatever!!! Now I'm 7 months old and no better off than I was in the parking lot. I realize I may sound a little snotty, but do you blame me? I just want what I want when I want it! A home! |
 |
Yo! We're Andre, Jewel & BigBoi! Figured it was appropriate for radio stars to be on the actual radio! Besides, we're 3 whole months old now...definately old enough to be out and about! Our sister, Sheena, couldn't come today, but sends her regards! We want to make sure she is included! All of us were found running around a neighborhood almost a month ago. Please don't judge, momma was done with us and an adventure sounded like a good way to have some fun! We're special! Wanna know why? Cuz' we can be any dog you want us to be! Look...don't you see some Schnauzer? Look again!...Airedale? How about some lab maybe? Today we've decided we're just dawgs! This is just a suggestion, but for those of you who enjoy suprises, wouldn't it be nice to watch us grow up and see what we become?...like we said, just a thought! |
 |
Hee-Hee! You gotta crush on me! I know that cuz that's my name...Crush! How could you not LOVE me? I even show my teethies when I grin! I may only be 9 months old, but I ain't no dummy! When I found out I was gettin' a picture, I practiced my smile because I heard from the other dogs that it's Adopt a Shelter Dog Month! Yep, that's right. This month I can be adopted for only $50. I've been a dreamin' of adoption since I got left over night in one of Dogwood's outdoor pens a couple a months ago! All 5 of me and my siblings was left. Crazy, right? Whatever! It ain't nothin but a thing to me. I jus know that there's a good home justa waiting for me. With the help of the Coyote dudes, I just know my times a comin'! See ya!

Breezy...
that's my name! I have heard that I am a VERY good example of a shelter dog. I have no specific breed, you see? I'm smallish, making my way to medium of sorts, I have some long hair, some short hair, a few wayward whiskers, my body is long, my legs...not so much, my tail is...well, you can see it for yourself. To make a long story short, I am a good spokes-dog for Adopt a Shelter Dog Month! I came to Dogwood about 4 weeks ago with my 3 litter mates. Our memories aren't quite clear on the matter, but we do know we were "dropped-off" on some farm. The farmer has way too much on his plate and couldn't take care of us, so here we are at Dogwood looking for homes. For the month of October, all dogs, young and old, that have been waiting for their furever homes for more than 30 days can be adopted for only $50! Me and my sisters are only 3 months old so, we haven't been spayed yet. Because of that, there is an additional deposit that has to be placed for us until you bring us back for our surgeries. That's just the shelter's assurance that we come back so we don't have any puppies that might get dumped themselves! See how neat that works?! Anyway, the adoption fees always include spay/neuter, all shots, and everybody here is micro-chipped! Please stop by the shelter! I'm sure that even if it's not me you pick, there is someone waiting for you here!
See you soon!

Wanna play? I wanna play! Do you wanna play? Let's play!
Hi! I'm Peaches and I am 5 whole months old!!! I have been at Dogwood since July, and while I am having lots of fun, I really would like to go home now! I had a home once for just a little bit, but they couldn't take care of me so they brought me to the shelter. It wasn't my fault, but I sometimes feel like I must have done something wrong. I tell you, I am the complete package! I am already spayed (no pups for me!), I have all of my puppy shots (rabies too!), and I am micro-chipped (don't want to be a "lost" dog, you know!)! I enjoy going out on walks and I also have the ability to wear your kids out! Bed time will be a breeze with me around, I promise! There's more good news too! October is "adopt a shelter dog month"! So.... that means any dog that has been available for adoption at Dogwood for more than 30 days can be adopted for only $50! If someone is not old enough to have been spayed or neutered yet (not me!), you will have to make a deposit until you bring them back for surgery. All in all it's a GREAT deal. Have you ever had a best friend that cost less than that? Nope!
See you soon!

Hi!
My name is Megan Marie which is much more than just some name! You see, I was a stray found all by my little lonesome by some wonderful people who took care of me until the shelter could take me in. They brought me to Dogwood for my first round of puppy shots and while I was there, the shelter staff asked if they could call me Megan Marie. A few weeks before I came, there was a wonderful older dog here at Dogwood with that name. She stayed up front with the girls in the office so that she would be comfortable in the air conditioning and have a nice soft bed. They guessed that she was at least 15 years old! Like me, she was a stray found all by herself. I believe in my heart that Megan Marie at one time had a home of her own. She must have gotten lost because no one would dump an old dog like that, would they? Anyway, I am hoping for my very own home soon, but I am willing to wait for the right one. Once I leave the shelter, I only want to come back to visit and play, not stay!...

Peaches, Elsie, and Jersey say...!
Designer Dogs? No way! We're much better than that! When you can't decide on exactly what you want, say for dinner, you can't just say "let's have it all" can you? Nope! Don't know what to wear...can't wear it all! But, if you can't quite decide what kind of dog you want...a mutt (that's us!) is the easy answer. Why live life worrying about what decision is the right one? We can be whatever you want, when you want it! Want a water dog today, let's go swimming...want a lap dog another day, we got that covered! How about a retreiver?...throw something already, we'll get it! You never know what we're "made" of, but you can be sure we all have hearts of gold! So, you see, the answer is quite simple! Adopt a shelter dog! It's the easiest decision you'll ever make (not to mention the BEST!).
Thanks for listening! Can't wait to see you at Dogwood Animal Shelter! |

Well Hello! How are you? We're Farrah and Lindsey. We came to Dogwood with our other 2 sisters quite a few weeks ago. We were found all by ourselves with no mommy in sight. We were sooo little that it took a while to get us healthy enough for adoption. But, guess what? The vet says it's time to find us a home! How exciting, right? Now, there are a few things we should tell you right away. We want to pampered (we are girls after all!), we have gotten used to having our food & water bowls full, flea prevention is a must (ladies should NOT have bugs!), treats are devine, we LOVE shoes like any other girl (we just chew them, that's all), outside time is another favorite, and pretty much any other "bling" you would like to bestow upon us would be accepted with gratitude. So, thanks for listening and hope to see you real soon!
Farrah and Lindsey |

Hey! It's Remi again!
I'm an soooo excited that I get to be on the radio AND in the newspaper this week!!! You see, the vet said last week that it would be best for me to be in a home all my own to speed up my recovery. However, I am still here! I don't understand. I really thought someone would come get me and love me all better. Well, because I have had to stay here, for my safety, I have had to be in a room all by myself. If I am allowed to run around with the other animals, I might get hurt and mess up my jaw. It's fragile you know... 300 other animals, 16 employees, countless volunteers, and I'm STILL lonely. Doesn't make a lot of sense, does it? Now you know why I am so looking forward to my radio interview. I will actually get to leave the shelter if only for a few hours. My hope is that my fur-ever best friend listens to 107.9, The Coyote, or is an avid local newspaper reader. I just know in my heart that you are out there somewhere waiting for me like I am waiting for you. But, I can't drive, so it's up to you to come get me, ok? |
 |
I am the ittiest, bittiest, kitty-est at Dogwood Animal Shelter! My name is Freeway and, as if you couldn't already guess, I was found alongside the highway. I'm not sure how I got there, but now I am at Dogwood and life is pretty cool here. I really would like a home of my own though. You see, as cats should be, I am a rather curious soul. My only complaint here is that I don't get out of my kitty play area very much so I can't go exploring! I think I am about 9 weeks old, but since I can't even remember how I got on the highway, you can't really expect me to remember my birthday, right? Anyway, I know inside my little kitty heart that I am going to be the best cat anyone could ever ask for! PLEASE come adopt me!! I need room to roam! (toys are great too!) Thanks for listening!

Howdy Coyote Nation!
We're here to let you know that it's currently "puppy-palooza" at Dogwood Animal Shelter! There are just so many puppies currently residing here, that it's difficult to get noticed! Also, because Dogwood is a no-kill shelter, there is no room left for other animals needing shelter right now. The rule is: some have to go out for more to come in! In our litter there are six! Our momma was hit by a car when we were only 9 days old! She's doing well, but because of all the meds she had to take, the Dr. wouldn't let her nurse us anymore. So, some wonderful foster mommas took us in, bottle fed us, and did everything for us in place of our momma. It sure was weird going from a 4-legged momma to a 2-legged one! But, now that we are used to it, we sure would like to have an entire 2-legged family to call our own. There are a bunch of other litters here too. Stop by and get to know us all. It will be worth it! |

Ok, what do you think about when you hear the name Apollo?
Landing on the moon, Greek God, Gold Medalist, the famous theatre?... the list goes on and on. Not to brag or anything, but I am named after greatness! However, I am still waiting to be discovered at Dogwood Animal Shelter. I don't get it...I was born here at the end of April this year, made available for adoption in June, and still waiting in August! I have done my best to live up to my name, but it has become apparent that grovelling may become necessary in order to get out of here. I am still on the small side, but getting bigger every day. I have heard the older cats talking in the next room and they say that if us kittens don't get adopted soon, we will end up being here for a very long time. How am I suppose to live up to my potential when I am stuck in the kitten room all the time? Please help me. I will be the best kitten, then cat, you could ever hope for! My name guarantees it.
Thanks!

Carmel & Randy comin' atch ya! We're siblings of the "Lab-stiff" breed (lab and mastiff mix)! Our feet might be big, but they're webbed! Take us swimming please... We LOVE the pool on the puppy patio at the shelter, but a creek, stream, river, or lake sounds like tons more fun. You really couldn't ask for a better mix of breeds you know! Labs are smart, obedient, and loyal to the end...Mastiffs are easy-going, gentle, all-around good dogs. Seriously, what fault could you find? And, to top all that off, we (& our 3 sisters still at the shelter) are just the cutest puppies you will ever come across in your life! We swear! Treats are great, toys are fun, laps are best, blah, blah, blah... we're not selling used cars here, it shouldn't be so hard! Please come get us, we're ready to be part of a family, not a pack.
Thanks,
Carmel & Randy (& Emmy Lou, Martina and Tiger Lilly) |

Hi! I'm Gatsby, and yes, I'm GREAT! My momma came to the shelter already pregnant, so I was born here at Dogwood. At 3 months old, I am almost ready to be neutered! That means that I will not be the cause of any more homeless kitties like me. I am sooo proud of that. Besides, if I understand it right, being neutered makes me more likable and takes away a few health risks too! Like I said to begin with, I'm great! That means healthy, playful, eager to please, ready to be your best friend, I get along well with others, I have all my shots, and even my very own micro-chip! Talk about ready to go! It only takes a few minutes to fill out my adoption paperwork and claim me as your very own fuzzball! Bring your photo I.D., permission from your landlord if you rent, and a lap for me to sit in and I'm all yours!
See you soon,
Gatsby |

We are Mercedes and Porsche...you can call us Little M and the Divine Ms. P! We are incredibly special and we know it!!! We were born here at the shelter back in the clinic. We have had a little bit of a hard time getting ready for adoption. Some days we haven't felt too good, so we have been going home with some of the staff members here. (Some days we felt ok, but we still wanted to go home with somebody!) Anyway, we really would like to stay together if possible. You see, we both feel so much better with our sister near. Our momma was a Jack Russel mix and only weighed about 30 pounds. We expect that we will stay on the small side as well. Although, we have discovered that treats are a wonderful thing! When we smell those, we don't care one little bit about our girlish figures! You must know that special girls require special humans. So, if you feel that you are the right fit for us, stop by and we'll give you a sniff or two!

Beautiful! That is the only word needed to describe me, nothing else. So, come get me already. Can you believe that I am stuck in a room with other cats!? Seriously! I even have to eat from the same bowl as them! I am declawed in front because of my love of all things silk! That way I don't snag my bed; it must stay pristine! I demand it. I am a very loving girl when I choose to pay attention to you. As it should be, everything goes according to my plan, schedule, and comfort. Thank goodness I am already spayed; children are not my idea of a good time! I barely have time to take proper care of myself and my things let alone some whiny little kittens. My vaccinations are up-to-date as well. I wouldn't have it any other way! Why aren't you here to get me yet?

Hi again everyone! It's Marci. On the 18th of this month I will be 11 months old. I really had hoped that I would have a furever home before my first birthday, but it's not looking so good. All of my siblings have found their homes and are doing well. I sure would like to know what it's like out there. I have been at Dogwood since I was just 8 weeks old! My mama was what they call a stray, so once we were weaned, she took off and I haven't seen her since. My sister, Peppermint Patty, kept my spirits up pretty good, but just last week she got adopted. I'm trying my best not to be depressed, but I sure do miss my brothers and sisters a lot. I just think that if I could concentrate on being a good member of a human family, I would feel so much better. I am a very smart girl (that's what my caretakers say). I know how to sit, I listen very well, and I enjoy going out on a leash. Please, if you are looking for a friend, consider me. You will NOT regret it...that is my promise!!!

***Yawn***
Sorry we're so tired, but it sure is fun here at the shelter! We have played all day and could not stay awake for our photo-op! Besides, we both wanted to get our beauty sleep for the radio this morning. We are Chelsea & Krista, the two cutest sisters you ever will see. Humans are still a little scary for us, but we're trying really hard to trust everyone a little more. Treats sure are GREAT! Once we figured that part out, it was easy to be brave. We would love to meet you all and test our new social skills. Visiting hours at the shelter are from 10am - 5pm Monday thru Friday, and Saturdays from 10am - 4pm. We will be closed on Monday the 5th in observance of the holiday. Make sure to stop by soon; our social calendars will be filling up quickly!

Good Day!
My name is Moppet and I currently reside at Dogwood Animal Shelter! I really rather enjoy my days here, but am getting tired of sharing absolutely everything. I mean come on! Just once I would like to walk out on the patio and get the sunny spot on the log without having to scare someone else away. Don't get me wrong, I am a very loving girl and would make a great addition into any family; it would just be nice to be one of two, maybe three cats...not 150! Don't forget that June is Adopt a Shelter Cat month. In other words...Hurry up already!
Thanks for listening,
Moppet

Hello, My name is Jack and I have lived here at Dogwood most of my one and a half years. As you can see, I have a beautiful, shiny black and grey coat. Come a little closer and you will notice a little orange coloring around my face. Although I am worthy of more, I truly just want to be comfortable, loved, played with and live a fulfilled life. You will find that I am quite smart, playful, loving, and err on the side of mature! I do enjoy spending time with people. So, let me just part with this message: Rescue at cat, namely me. I am waiting!
Love,
Jack

Meet Murphy
Hey ya'll! Murphy here... My job today is to remind you about Adopt a Shelter Cat Month! During the month of June, all cats and kittens at Dogwood Animal Shelter are available to adopt for only $50! That includes the spay or neuter, all shots, and micro-chipping. Some of us have been here at the shelter for so long that I'm putting a lot of hope into this promotion. It would be so nice to have a real home where we can get individual attention. The staff and numerous volunteers do everything they can to give me a little more than our basic needs, but with so many of us (150!!) currently living at the shelter, they can't spare more than a few minutes at a time. I look forward to having my very own toys to chase around and more than a couple of minutes with a good brush once a week! Please, if you have the time, stop by and visit me soon. Even if you can't adopt one of us right now, your few minutes of attention are a few more that we would greatly appreciate.
|
 |
We're black, we're white, we're striped, we're orange, we're tan, we're CROWDED!!! It's what you would call "kitten crazy" up here at Dogwood Animal Shelter right now. A few of us adorable little kittens are hittin' the airwaves today to let you know that June is Adopt a Shelter Cat month. Would you believe that there are over 40 of us kittens at the shelter right now? And...over 150 adult cats. So, for the rest of the month, you can add a cat to your family for only $50! That includes our spay or neuter, all of our shots are up-to-date, and we are micro-chipped so we can always get back home if we're lost!

Hey, Roundman. How's it goin'? Remember me? I'm Duke and this is… well… my significant other… Duchess. Yeah… we're back at the shelter. We first went there three years ago, after our owner died and his wife went to a nursing home. That was tough. It took a year and a half to find us a new home. Even tougher, our new owners had to move to a place where we aren't welcome. So… here we are… again… after two great loving homes.
Shouldn't complain, though. Two squares a day, roof over our heads, lots of action around us, comfy bed, and most of all, Duchess and I are still together. Tell ya what. Duchess and I have lived through some tough times together and we've managed to stay mellow. Huh… maybe that's not too unusual at 10 and 12 years old, though, huh?
Yeah! 10 and 12 years old! Where did the time go? Not much chance of anyone wanting to give us a real home at our ages. The way we look at it, though, what's age? Say we have two to maybe five years left. That's up to 5 years of the best doggie love anyone could have. And the bonuses!!! You know, we're totally housebroken: I bark when I need to go out and Duchess stares pitifully at the door. We don't want to go for long walks and we'll take kisses, hugs and pats any day over chasing balls. And you sure don't have to worry about us chewing stuff up with our old teeth! Yeah, man. We're mellow, alright. We don't need or want much. Happiness is a warm doggie bed and a couple of treats.
But, here's the thing, Roundman. If you could help get Duchess a real home, I'd be mighty beholden to you. I'd miss her somethin' awful, but if we both can't be happy, please let it be her. I could find a lot of happiness just knowing Duchess has a loving home.
OK, my man. Do what you can. And… please know… we bless you for it!

Hello Coyote people!
We're Kirsten, Keane, Keefer, & Keeley. In the middle of the night a couple of weeks ago, we were dropped off at the gate to the shelter with our mommy. The shelter employees said something about how that means the "Spring Fling" has begun...whatever that means. Anyway, life has been pretty cool since we got here because we've met lots of other kitty friends. (32 others to be exact!) But, now that we've had time to be part of a larger group, we would like the chance to become part of a smaller family. We would like to invite you to come visit us in the kitten room at Dogwood Animal Shelter and give us a chance to steal your heart! If not us, then maybe one of the 32 other babies!
Hope to see you soon!

Hi! Hi! Hi!
We're Addie and Finley. We are both beautiful little girls who are currently entertaining the staff at Dogwood Animal Shelter. We just recently became available for adoption and are hoping that our "fur-ever" friends will come get us soon! Both of us love everyone at the shelter, but we know that in order for more homeless pets to find shelter there, we have to go to nice homes first!
"Addie was found all by herself in a parking lot! Can you believe it? Look at her face...would you be able to pass her by? She is also a very good friend!" "Thanks for telling my story Finley! Now let me tell you all about Finley:
Finley's momma was hit by a car when she was just a couple of weeks old. Isn't that horrible?! She came to shelter with a litter of 7 pups. Unfortunately, only Finley and 2 others made it through! Both of her brothers have already been adopted, so without me, she would be on her own!" We hope that you will all stop by and meet us soon. We really are too cute for words!!! Thanks for listening!

Peppermint Patty is my name...finding a home is my game! Hi All! I am another one of Dogwood's Big Black Dogs. However, I am only 8 months old, so I'm not so big yet. You previously had the pleasure of meeting my brothers, Linus & Schroeder. Luckily, Linus has found a home, but Schroeder, Marcie, and myself are still waiting. Just a reminder...Big Black Dog Syndrome awareness month ends this Friday! Please don't wait any longer! I am getting so nervous thinking about having to leave the puppy room and go to the kennel. I am keeping my hopes up though because so far this month 29 black dogs have been adopted from Dogwood. So, I know that my family is out there somewhere. Thanks for listening and I hope to see you soon! (By Friday please) |
 |
Cheese!!! No, really, do you have some? I'm smiling already! My name is Midnight and if you can't tell by my name alone, I am another one of Dogwood's Big Black Dogs! I have been at the Shelter since February 2006. Will someone please come take me home? I got the chance once, but they brought me back because I was NOT aggressive! Can you believe that? It's ok though, they wanted to leave me chained outside and I prefer to be part of the family myself. Kids are great too! (they drop food and crumbs...he-he!) So, if you are looking for a best friend and someone to share your secrets (and treats!) with, I'm your guy!
Hope to see you soon.

Hi Everyone!
My name is Izzy! I am yet another Big Black Dog at Dogwood Animal Shelter, but I will tell you why I'm a little different. You see, I have a problem with my eyes. It is called Entropion. In other words, my eyelids roll in and cause the hair to rub my eyeballs. I don't complain much, but it does hurt a lot so you may see some tears in my eyes on occasion. The vet told my caretakers that I have a very severe case and that if I don't get surgery I will go blind! I really enjoy this beautiful world around me and hope that my caretakers can find a way to help me. The surgery is going to cost at least $450! I know that the shelter does not have that kind of money laying around, but I am a positive thinker, so I will just keep hoping! If you would like to help my caretakers help me, please write my name, Izzy, on any sized donation. (Even $5 would go far!) 100% of ALL donations given to Dogwood Animal Shelter go directly to our care & our caretakers put absolutely every penny to good use! However, after food, shots, micro-chips, and the normal spays & neuters, there are not enough funds leftover for "extras." But, like I said, I am an optimistic girl, so I know that there are those of you out there who will come through for me! Thanks in advance! |

Hello Dog Lovers!
I am Champ and I am so excited to let you know that my sister, Carley, has been adopted! It is my pleasure to replace her as Dogwood Animal Shelter's "spokes-dog" and continue to teach you all about "Big Black Dog Syndrome!" I arrived with Carley and the rest of our litter on January 2, 2005! I have never had a chance to leave the shelter! Although I am only 5 years old, I have become a little grey around the chops! Don't let that fool you though, I am VERY young at heart! Because of "Big Black Dog Syndrome" I don't get noticed at all! I apparently blend in with all the other black dogs. I just wish (like all the other black dogs here) that some one would just give me a chance! If you come visit me, please get a leash and take me out for a walk. One on one I can show you all that I have to offer. I am very interested in getting out of here so that I can find out what this thing called a "ball" is that the incoming dogs talk about. They all miss it whatever is, so it must be something special. Do you have one? If so, I would LOVE to help you take care of it! |

Hello everyone!
My name is Piper! I was introduced to you last week in place of my friends, Linus and Schroeder. They were busy spreading the message about "Big Black Dog Syndrome" and asked me to fill in for them at the last minute. Because it is such an important topic, I had no problem getting up early and coming to the radio station! All of us "little" big black dogs know all too well what happens when we get too big to stay up front in the puppy room. We have to go in back to the "kennels" (sounds like a scary place to me!) where we will blend in with all the other black dogs. Someone said that maybe black dogs are overlooked because the seem scary. Look at me! Do I really look scary? I really am a marshmallow (don't tell the boys please!)! My goal in life is to be a lap dog! While the sun is shining, I will play with you, love you, sit with you, and follow you anywhere! When the moon is out, I will watch over you and keep you safe until the sun rises again! Just give me a chance, I promise I will stand-out to you and for you!
Thanks for listening,
Piper |

This stub-tailed cutie is Churchill. She has been with us since May, 2009. Although we are not sure of her age, we are guessing that she is a young adult. Love and attention is what she's looking for. She adores everyone and will play as long as you are willing. Stop by the shelter and give her a chance. She will prove to you what a great cat she is! |
 |
This handsome fella is Tank! He is a very sweet, out-going kind of guy. People always comment about how quiet he is! He gets along with everybody...puppies, older dogs, and even cats. Tank was found by the shelter staff upon their arrival to work one morning in last June. He learned all of the basic commands quickly and does pretty good on a leash. He will be turning one in March... maybe adoption paperwork will be his birthday present! |
 |
Grumpy came in with the other 6 "dwarfs" in October, 2006. He and his twin, Doc, are both still here at Dogwood! While he is extremely handsome, he is also very shy. But, once he gets to know you, he'll play all day! Grumpy has done well with the obedience trainers, learning sit, down, & come. When first put on a leash he pulls a little, but after a bit, he enjoys the walk! Won't you come be his "Snow White"?!! "Hi-ho, hi-ho, it's off to a home he goes!" And...don't forget about his twin brother, Doc! |
 |
Ebony is such a handsome guy! We just don't understand why he hasn't found a "fur-ever" home yet! He came to Dogwood Animal Shelter just six weeks old, almost FIVE years ago! Our canine coaches have taught him how to sit, stay, lay down, and come. He loves to earn his treats! He still pulls a little on the leash, but with more frequent walks, we're sure he would learn the "heel" command as quickly as he learned the others! Come by the shelter and visit Ebony; you won't regret it! |
 |
Delta is one of our newest "inmates"! We couldn't resist putting her in this adorable prisoner garb donated to us. Delta and her litter-mates arrived via a box at Dogwood! We believe that she and her brothers are sheppard/husky mixes. Delta was the only girl and is absolutely the boss of the puppy pile! We estimate her to be approximately 10 weeks old. Stop by and help her escape! (At least from her brothers!) |
 |
Thunder came to Dogwood Animal Shelter in March, 2007. We estimated that he was about 2 months old then. He has done very well with the Canine Coaches that come to the shelter. They say that he follows all of the basic commands and walks well on a leash. Thunder enjoys playing with dogs and people! Will you be his lifetime playmate? |

Here's Spanky! He is a very affectionate, playful, loving, cross-eyed cat! Yes, I said cross-eyed! Spanky has a long, sad story with a happy ending. He was found in a chemical filled ditch as a kitten. The chemicals burned his inner eyelids, requiring him to endure many rounds of treatments to get better. We then moved Spanky to the adoption area so that he could find a home. However, within days, we noticed he was having problems with his eyes again. Unfortunately, the chemical burns to his inner eyelids caused his lashes to begin growing inward towards his eyes, causing an infection. The only way to remedy this problem for Spanky was to remove the inner eyelids. Because of this, he now appears to be cross-eyed! There was a lot of concern about him losing his sight for a while, but our little trooper pulled through without a problem. He now requires eye drops as needed to help him lubricate his eyes, but other than that, he is the purr-fect cat! Wouldn't he look great in your window sill? |

LADY is a 3 ½ year old Rottweiler mix. She is one of our STARS! Quite honestly we are surprised she hasn’t been adopted yet. Lady was adopted from us as a puppy. Her owners returned her to the shelter about two years ago when they lost their home and couldn’t take her with them. She is an absolute all around great dog! She is gentle, good with people and other dogs; as well as being affectionate, obedient and attentive. She is also housebroken! Please give this loving family dog a home again! |
 |
BROWNIE came to us one year ago as a puppy. She is an adorable Australian Shepard/Lab mix. Her owners were unable to keep the entire litter. Brownie is playful, loving and wants lots of affection. She is very well behaved and highly attentive. She should be a breeze to train! |
 |
BISCUIT – She is a 2 ½ year old Australian Shepard mix. She is a super sweet dog!! She needs help on a leash due to her shyness; but as attentive and smart as she is, she should pick it up in no time! She is wonderful with other dogs. Look into her eyes-----she’s saying “hey you---take me home!” |
 |
HENDRIX is a lab mix who is almost 1 year old. He was born November 28, 2008 in foster care, and brought to us December 20, 2008…one of our “Christmas” babies! Hendrix is playful, affectionate and attentive. He’s ready for training! He is great with people, other dogs and children. He is truly the all around dog any family would want. OCTOBER IS ADOPT A SHELTER DOG MONTH!! |
 |
LOUISA is a little over 3 years old and is a Shepherd mix. She is very intelligent and has been to obedience training. She knows the commands of sit, come and down. She is great on a leash too! She absolutely loves to get & give attention! Louisa is one of our shelter dogs that during the month of October, can be adopted at a reduced rate. What a great time to get the perfect addition to your family! October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month. |
 |
Bobby is a 2 year old coonhound mix. When meeting you for the first time, he is a little shy. But when he knows you he is very loving! He wants to give and receive affection. He gets along great with other dogs too. Won't you find a place in your heart and home for Bobby? |
 |
Shiloh is a very sweet, playful, & loveable black lab/terrier mix. She came to us as a puppy in February of this year. She enjoys being brushed and would like to be trained. Shiloh gets along very well with other dogs and is good with kids. She would be a perfect addition to any family. |
 |
Bugsy is one of the most loving, affectionate dogs at the shelter. A one year old male, Bugsy is a little shy, but loves people, other dogs and especially children. He has learned to walk beautifully on a leash. Because Bugsy is so attentive and wanting to please, he is easily trained. Treats? You don't need them. He's happy with hugs and kisses! Bugsy's only problem is that he's a black dog and therefore difficult to adopt. Anyone who looks past his color will realize quite readily what a wonderful guy he is. |
 |
This little wrinkle-faced Shar Pei is a sweetheart. He's loving and affectionate and gets along well with other dogs and people. Tate was born sometime in November of 2008, so he's still a playful pup. Brought to the shelter as a stray when he was seven months old, he's one of our favorite pooches. |

ADOPTED!
Cosmo! He is the coolest little guy. We think that Cosmo is a Cattle dog/Beagle mix. He is definitely unique. He loves to play and also thinks he might be a lap dog! He shows a lot of loyalty to his human counterparts and tries his hardest to be the "good boy!" Come visit him at Dogwood Animal Shelter and get to know him! Won't you please give him a home so that he no longer has to be the "stray?" |

ADOPTED!
Adopt Peanut! Peanut is a male cat, about 1 year old. Big beautiful yellow eyes - gets along great with other cats and dogs. He loves to chase the laser pointer too! |
|
ADOPTED!
Skippy is an 8 year old Lab mix. He was returned to the shelter after 7 years because his owner had to relocate, where she could not keep an animal. Skippy came from a good home. He's affectionate, loving to give and receive hugs. He's housetrained and enjoys playing with other dogs and children, too. There's no question, if you adopt Skippy, that you are getting the best dog you've ever had. |

Toodles is about as close to the perfect companion as any dog can be. She's a 1 1/2 year old bull terrier mix, medium-sized and extremely affectionate. Toodles loves people, though she tends to be a bit shy when first meeting someone. She's the kind of dog that loves to hang out with one person at a time, following at the person's side. Besides loving people, Toodles gets along great with other dogs and is playful and energetic. Our kennel staff say that she's obedient, attentive and actually a lot of fun, the kind of dog with whom a person bonds. Toodles is just hoping for a home where someone will be her best friend. |

ADOPTED!
Velvet came to us in mid-March as a stray; she was pregnant and about to deliver pups. She's a beautiful young, brindle and white Basenji mix. She was a very good mama to her 6 healthy puppies. All of them have been adopted now, but Velvet is still here - waiting. Though she has experienced motherhood, Velvet’s still got some puppy qualities herself. She's alert, energetic, playful and loves attention! Come and visit with her. We’re hoping she doesn’t have to wait too long for someone special to come rescue her! |

ADOPTED!
Rocky is a medium-sized 4 year old spaniel mix who has lived at the shelter since May. He is truly a sweet, easy-going little guy, friendly with people, cats and other dogs. Rocky is very well-behaved and was obviously housetrained. He's also a great traveler, having been a companion dog for an over-the-road trucker. Rocky is ready to be your best pal! |

ADOPTED!
Abigail, Alice and Martha, also known as "The Reds", are three older pups who have lived at Dogwood Animal Shelter for approximately nine months. They came to the shelter as young pups in poor condition, the worst case of ticks we've ever seen. It took four employees and volunteers three hours to rid them of all the ticks.
The three girls, approximately six months old at the time, had had no human contact and therefore were terrified of humans. Martha has managed to become quite social, not so with Abigail and Alice, who take a great deal of time to trust people. Though Abigail and Alice have become friendly with our front office staff, they hide under the reception desk, terrified, when visitors come through the front door. These three girls are among the most lovable, affectionate dogs we've had at the shelter. Absolutely, they will make terrific additions to any family. But, before that can happen for Abigail and Alice, they need to be socialized. |

Lily is a small, sweet natured middle aged dog with a heart problem which is being controlled by medication. She was found in someone's barn, hiding from a storm. She's been with us for a couple of months or so. She loves children, adults and other dogs and cats. She spends her days at the shelter following the med wing staff and volunteers around as they do their work. If there's too much commotion, she starts to wheeze, but a few quiet moments of one-on-one attention for her usually settles her back down.
We just received a litter of small abandoned pups. Lilly is fretting over them and trying to be their mom!
She'll be such a loyal friend for someone! |
